Long gun in Jack Reacher movie

What type of rifle is the "gunny" using in this movie?

Looks like something in .308 caliber or even 30-06 but not sure.
Also near the end the gunny shoots the other sniper and happens to hit the receiver of other sniper's rifle and makes a hole in it.
Can that really happen?

Its an AR-10 variant presumably it would have an aluminum receiver. I would think it would be very possible to put a hole in an aluminum rifle receiver with .308 Win. Though I would think it may be more likely to shatter. Aluminum is usually brittle.
