app is Merlin Bird ID by Cornell University & others.

there is an option, Sound ID, which uses the microphone on your phone to record and actively identify songs of birds near you. it then saves the recording so you can replay and hear/ID again what species made what noise.

hope y’all enjoy as much as I do.

This will be a great app to use this fall while sitting in my tree stand,
especially on those warmer days when the birds seem to be everywhere.

    Again thanks for posting this.

For most nature apps (not necessarily Merlin or ones dealing with stars), us professionals say "An app is the fastest, most convenient way to get the wrong answer." When dealing with spiders and certain plants, mistaken identity could have dire consequences.

    Sounds like Shazam for birds.

When I was a kid, one summer the counselor who took us on a week-long canoeing trip was an amateur ornithologist. He could do this. It was cool.

It's not terribly difficult if you study it, at least for the common species.

I've found Merlin to be pretty darn accurate. The sound ID is a newer feature though (maybe right around a year) and I haven't used it enough to come to a conclusion.
