Where does the term "pet load" come from?

I assumed this was the load you used when you had to take Ol' Yeller behind the barn.

8 grains of Unique for me can be found in 44 mag, 45 LC and 44-40.

I used to keep a rifle behind the kitchen door. Didn't realize it had a pet load until late one night....had to tell the kids the family cat ran away ...I still feel bad about that one...

Ken Waters, Writer for Handloader magazine did an article under the name pet loads. He also had his works published under the name pet loads in a rather large book. It has been a real treasure for me when taking on new calibers for reloading.
