I recently picked up a 12 ga pump pretty cheap and plan to fix it up a little. The metal and bluing are in good shape but the stock needs refinished. I have refinished furniture before, but never a gun. Is it the same? Anyone have any "secrets" that they are willing to share? Also, I'm going for a nice dark look, but will actual walnut stain be too dark for this wood? I'm not sure exactly what the stock is made from. Thanks.

Oh, maybe the actual gun info would help. Its a Sears & Roebuck Model 200 Pump 12 gauge. Plain jane edition (no checkered stock or sight rail) with 28" full choke barrel. I'm pretty sure its a Winchester 1200 without the name.

One suggestion from me. Install brass or steel threaded inserts for the butt-plate. The holes in the stock are probably mostly stripped out already.
