$300 is what several on line retailers are selling them for. They are mostly old LE trade ins. Look it over closely, but most of that I have seen have been carried more than they have been shot. Used to have a 5906, it was a tank. But dependable as the sun rising.

Well, looking it over is going to be an issue, because I'm buying it from an online dealer. I found them at Bud's, who else has them? Maybe I could call and have someone hand pick one for me like they do with the Mosins.

Truth be told, I don't really care how beat up it is, as long as it's functional. I like old, dirty guns.

I bought a new S&W 39 for 125.00 and could get a 59 new for 150.00. We were told by the department that it was useless to buy one because we would never be ably to carry automatics. When we could, I traded it in for the 639 and it was a lot better gun. The 59 was the first of a line. I had a few problems with my 39 and officers who bought the 59 stated that the had similar problems with the 59. Try it out and see if you like it first. My problems were break down (pin would stick) and feeding rounds from the magazine.

    It's a 59, for $269, but it's rough. I'm also looking at a 5906 from CDNN for $299.

Gonna spend some time calling LGS in my area, see what they have. Try to avoid shipping and FFL fees.

Over on the S&W forum, there have been a few reports on those CDNN 5906's and so far everyone was happy.

I saw a couple at Bradis for around 300 but trade-in pieces and they looked that way too. There's been a couple post on INGO for mod 59 for around 500.00. I saw one at the Stout Field Gun Show last weekend and it had a talking tag around 5 bills. And, I've seen them on line with tags all over the place.

$500? That seems a bit steep for a gun that went out of service 30 years ago.

Here's the stock photo Bud's is using, I'm imagining this is the best of the bunch. Kinda rough, but I don't mind.

I got a 5906 from CDNN. I paid extra for "select condition". It looked pretty but I had to send it to Smith and Wesson for barrel repairs. FWIW I hear they are scraping the bottom of the barrel on 5906s at CDNN.

You paid extra for hand selection and STILL had to send it back in? Yikes. They have 6506's for $30 more, I wonder what those are looking like.

FWIW, the exterior looks beautiful for a trade in.

I have a 5906 and a 6906, they are built like a tank, very nice pistols. They usually run around $350-$400, for one in good condition. If it were me I would spend a little more over the gen 1 pistols.

The first gun I ever bought when I turned 21 was a new 559. It was the all carbon steel frame model. I still have it, and only a few hundred rounds through it. At 40 ounces empty it was like carrying a boat anchor, and the grip is a little too big for my liking. I would recommend trying the fit of one in your hand before buying.

You can buy a model 469 (double-stack second generation compact 9mm) for about the same price on Gunbroker. I have bought a couple and they worked out great. I think I would do that over a beat up 59.

I'd get the 5906 if it were only $30 more. I've had several of the 39/59 Series and all were good guns. For $300 you'd be getting a decent gun that should last you a long time. :twocents:

I voted YES, but I thought I was voting for the 5906. Multiple problems were fixed in the 5906 that made it hugely reliable, but if the 59 was the first run, then there were probably problems.
