Come with us now as we go back in time to about 1970. Running combat matches when there were very few of the shooting sports that we have now. Brave men that did not have too much to choose from whether it be a revolver or a 1911 in 45. Quite simply, the shooter and the equipment had to work..every time…to win these contests. Unlike Bullseye with it’s alibis and long time slots, the shooter had to know and work with his equipment with out all the girlie cutsey stuff we have now. Deep secure carry in premium leather and rounds heavy enough to get the job done without compromise of today’s pistols. It is a defensive lifestyle that clings to the reality that if you can’t do it in 5 or six rounds, you are in the wrong fight.

At 18:00 hours Bay four at ACC turned into a down and dirty combat zone. Three rounds to the left and three rounds to the right and one round in the head in any order with a pass or fail par time of 9 seconds. Easy Peasey. Or so we thought. As the 1911 45 Club shooters made some almost half inch holes on this simple but high pressure course, it became clear that calling your shots and controlling the front sight is real important.

This match report(something MD do not do anymore) is from Season 9, Stage 1 of the 1911 45 Club. While the turnout was low, it made for some mighty amusing fun runs on this course. Some as low as 3.81. Now the 1945 Club is not a volume roster by any means being held on a week night combined with the reluctance of many 1911 45 owners to stand up and be tested with raw weaponry as it was in it’s day. Did I mention, that according to the rule book, only AZone hits count. Sloppy spraying will not get the job done in this game. Thanks to the team that came out tonite and braved the COF. We even had some time to break out the JFrames for a side event, which proved this back up piece earns a place in defense. The next Stage is set for Tuesday Nite Combat at ACC on June 15, hammer down at 18:00 hours. PM me to get on the mailing list as you just can’t get this much fun for $10.00 on a Tuesday Nite. On season two I suggested that if sister clubs would like to hold these events and eventually bring to the table a traveling team concept, there is room for that. While the ammo crisis, high round count, expensive entry fees, girlie gadjt guns and holsters are fun to play with, and talking/owning 1911 45’s, they are no contest for this high energy pass or fail discipline for those of us who brave the big bores.

    See you on the range.
