Oops! I loaded about 20 small rifle primers in my .40. Safe to use or should I pop them out? They seem to have seated deep enough. That really should make the packages different colors for rifle and pistol primers, don't you think?

Usually, the rifle primers, are just a little harder, and it talks more to set them off .....

I've used them in light .38's on purpose when small pistol were hard to find. You can find plenty of people who shoot them out of .40 on the internet but for a buck and a piece of mind if you have doubts, pop them and start over. The whole packaging thing sounds good but it is clearly written on the outside. Not trying to be mean or sarcastic but attention and care is up to the guy pulling the lever.

Probably safer pressure wise than magnum primers, but I'd still pull them.

Pressure almost certainly won't be an issue unless you're already working with a load that is marginal. Breach face erosion may well be a problem. Rifle primers have hard cups that don't seal as well at pistol pressures. Don't ask me how I know......
