Smith and Wesson dash Question

Okay, I've tried to search it, but my google-fu is weak tonight. I just bought an awesomely used Smith and Wesson 581 and was wondering how do I find out what dash it is (if at all). Thanks in advance for the help.

open the cylinder and look on the frame....

Swing out the cylinder and look at the crane. You will see the model number stamped there and if it's a dash model it will say 581-2 or whatever.

Above is correct. However, I do not think the 581 ever had a dash, or if it did, only a -1. It was not made very long. You may see an "M" stamped under the cylinder yoke though as there was a recall. Guns sent back to S&W had an M stamped there.

The recall was minor, a somewhat rare problem reported of primer flow with certain brands and loads of ammo. Some collectors don't want the M, some don't care.

ETA I too picked up a sweet 581 not long ago, Evansville rocks the fixed sight yo!

The 'dash' is the dash (presented as "-") in the model number indicating a variant distinct from the initially offered model. For example, my Model 60 is a 60-9, indicating (among other details) that it is chambered in .357 Magnum and has metal injection molded hammer and trigger assemblies, as opposed to the original 60 in .38 special with all stainless parts.

Thanks. Picked up a lot of good info. I do have the "M" stamp, but I'm not worried either way, I was just looking for a good .357. Never been a big revolver guy, but it was calling my name and I enjoy it.

I got to thinking the same way, snorko. My 66 probably has the best action of any of the S&W's that I have worked.
I went ahead+took off the "Pretty Grips" and put the "Shooters Grips" back on it==It's also a "Keeper"....Bill.
