You have to assume that any electronic device is gathering every bit of data it can and even data you can't possibly fathom. It is all collected, down to the most minute insignificant detail and being uploaded. Everyone complains about it now and I find it hilarious. This has been the standard since... well forever. Do people not understand big tech and why they're worth so much? Everyone wants free stuff (services), this is part of the cost.

How many times have the FAANG's bowed to China. How man hundreds of billions of $ have they given to the FAANG's? It's all made there. Suicide nets around the buildings. Removal of apps/features. Censorship. That's just on the surface.

I remember seeing a video early last year on how TikTok's algorithm changed content based on location. That I can see as a legit problem, especially since China is not our ally. That's the political hot-topic today, but I think it's really because of something else.

All of that data has been for sale for decades now. That's the real reason they're upset, not because of any type of cultural subversion, but that they're getting all that juicy data for free.

The horse left the barn long ago.

Does it? I mean, I wouldn't be surprised, but I'd look to a security expert or news source like Slashdot or Ars Technica rather than a politician. It's safe to assume they never get their facts straight.

Pretty sure that's really not a thing, more of a fabrication of Mike Daisey's imagination. The places I've been to are pretty decent.

It goes back to 2010, I think. Just business in their eyes. Things have probably changed, can't affect profits. International news will get the virtue signalers out-in-force and cause a dip in the stock. I've never been so I can't say what it's like today.

Never used Tiktok, don't have any social media accounts outside forums.

How could you ban it without some sort of national firewall? I guess you could prohibit US companies from advertising on it, but I don't understand the logistics of banning it all together. I think it's a pretty dangerous idea to ban it and not sure how it would pass 1st amendment court challenges.

Apparently there's a plan to have Oracle hold all the data in a facility in Texas and any data released to outside entities would require approval from the US gov't. That seems a pretty reasonable accomodation vs a feckless ban, but I fully admit I may be missing a lot of techno-wizardly that makes that plan unreasonable as well.
