Will 9 mm carbines be enough or do you think that a center fire semi auto rifle is needed? Just a hypothetical question. I know it would depend upon the situation, let's say an all out long term shtf scenario.

A 9mm carbine would be fine. Contrary to popular opinion, a SHTF instance won't be a never-ending, running gun battle.

near Bedford on a whole lot of land.
The short answer is that there is no universal right answer.

Pick a gun or guns that you can shoot well, are very reliable and easily repaired, and have reasonably common ammunition. Everything else is merely opinion, and a thread like this generates a lot of opinions.

Here's a hint though, very few people will survive extended or multiple gun battles.

A 9mm carbine will be fine.
I prefer something with more distance.
I EDC a 9mm and have decided on ARs for most everything else.
There's NO perfect choice 'cause we'll never know what we'll be facing until we might face it.

I'll vote "yes" and here's 2 reasons why:
    - They are everywhere, so parts (and ammo) will be plentiful.
    - They are like Legos, so they can fill many different roles.

I will quibble about "needed," in the sense that it is the tools that will be needed (regardless whether you practice throwing them on the ground). Different tools are best for different situations. An AR-platform can be different tools based on the needs.

I am a BIG fan of pistol caliber carbines. Have them in 9mm, .45ACP and .357 Mag. That all being said, if the SHTF, I would definitely be toting my AR above any PCC.

    Walking Dead/Jericho/One Second After/Falling Skies/scenario:

    1. Have PCC
    2. Use PCC to shoot or otherwise procure very lightly used AR from person who bought it "for SHTF"
    3. Now have both PCC and AR
