I must have been lucky with the one I got. With a bit of time and effort these are VERY accurate at distance and, they pack a hell of a wallop! Now don't get me wrong, my AR took no time at all to zero and put 6" groups at 500yds. but I eventually got my mosin to 8" groups and it is far more powerful.
Primitive? Yes! Ugly? To some. Fun? Without question! A Bi@$h to clean? You bet! But for the $140 I have into it (with a used scope and mount) I don't think you can beat them.

They're cheap. They're fun. They're a piece of history that you can do something with other than put it on a shelf.

Why is there so much love for these horrible guns. I myself got lured in years ago only to be disappointed. I hear all the tales of it being a 300 yard gun only to hear excuses on range day from the proud owners. I'm sure I will get flamed for this thread so my extinguisher is handy. I know that during the war they were used with some success, help me understand

Thanks for the thread, I've been in the silent minority for a long time. I got a half mind to take it out of the safe, demilitarize (in case the kids get to it) and hang it on the wall for aesthetics.

Just couldn't bring myself to ruin a functioning firearm...

What kind of groups were you getting at what distance?
    Iron sights or scoped?
    Offhand or Bench?

What groups were you getting with other rifles at the same distance?
    Iron sights or scoped?
    Offhand or Bench?

Only because they were too poor to make something else.

The m1a has been in service longer. Those are still in use today.

How has the m1a been in service longer? The m1a is not a in service at all. We use the m14. Also the mosin has been around since the 1890s. Just saying.

Yes it is an m14, not M1A. That being said the m14 is close behind the mosin and soon to pass it.

The FAL has been in use longer after some quick research.

M14 is numbered. It's heavy and cumbersome. It makes a good drill rifle that's about it. Although I don't think any organized army uses them I know we are still pulling old mosins, enfields, and Turkish mausers out of caves.

I think most modern firearms are ugly. :dunno: There is just something about a functioning piece of history that only costs about $120. I love wood and steel. Can't stand any tactical firearms.

Theyre cool if you dont expect to be a 500 yd Lapua, Tikka, or Sako. Accuracy is all relative. (Guys who have to hunt with shotgun know what Im talking about.) If your gun can consistently, reliably hit your target, (minute of bad guy or deer), thats enough to be a fun shooter. Some people consider a gun garbage if you cant give a fly a "wing ectomy" at 200. The FAL is idolized and is (generally) only about as accurate as some of the best Mosins or milled AKs Ive shot.

Al you guys talking about stiff actions on Mosins, have you bothered giving them a good cleaning? None of mine are any stiffer than any other bolt gun I've got.

I have plenty of firearms that cost far more than a Mosin but I ha e bought several of them lately and in the past as well. Not all of them are hard to operate, especially if you know the history of the rifle. They are accurate enough to hit a man at 300 yards and the sites go up from there because they were meant as a "volley fire" weapon at long ranges. Also if theu are 91/30 and are shot the way they were meant to be they are not jnwieldy at all. They were meant to be trench weapons so they would be shot from a rest. The straight bolt handle was also meant to be worked by the LEFT hand of a right handed shooter.
I agree with a lot of the other posters and it is different strokes for different folks... If it is a safe firearm and something someone can buy to get into shooting then all the more power to them! Not everyone can afford or even save up to afford a better weapon.

The 4 I currently have in our rack have actions as smooth as butter and 2 of them were smooth right off the rack at Bradis before cleaning. After cleaning they are all 4 smooth, cosmoline is a hateful woman and if you arent very firm she will stick in nooks and crannies and cause problems in the actions.

I love mine. I have a 91/30 and 3 carbines (M44, T53 and M38). The carbines are my favorite, with the M38 probably at #1. They're all as accurate as I am with iron sights. :dunno: Probably helps to be a recoil junkie too. :): I also have an AR, and I like shooting it too, but it's just utilitarian... it has no "soul" like the old wood & steel guns, IMHO. Mosins are the "gateway drug" of milsurp collecting. ;)

Only reason I got rid of mine was it was taking up too much room in my safe, and it was the least fun to shoot gun that I had at the time, so it had to go!
