I am nineteen years old with a wife and infant son..

Buddy, I have a job in the medical field, a safe full of awesome guns, and a decent car, and a great dog.....and no one to share it with.

Thus I still don't have a tenth of what you do at the age of 19.

We all started off in the same position you are. Once the family grows up and your job situation and your wife's job situation improves, you'll move on to bigger/better firearms, and you'll realize that the quality of your new, expensive guns is better.

However that doesn't mean that the hipoint/keltec/whatever won't do the job if you consitently take care of them and assess them. If they work, then great. People who crap on you for that should be ignored.

If it makes you feel better, you're still fortunate that you have a job. Where I came from, I know there's tons of people who'd be willing to trade their current life for yours. You have a roof, transportation and food. When you can afford those firearms, that's a luxury a lot of people don't have.

Like others have said, don't listen to these snobs. Practice with what you got and just make sure that it goes bang when needed.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with a hi-point,keltec or remington as long as it goes bang when you need it to. I recently bought my first glock I saved money for an entire year to afford it. before that i had a sigma that I paid 200 dollars for. It was terrible but it went bang (most of the time) and did what I needed it to. I am still several years away from joining the kimber club.

Dont let them discourage you. Get what you can afford. However IMO your money would be better spent on a mossberg (combo's with slug barrel can be found for a little over 300 at the right times).

My experience with guns, RC planes/helicopters, cars, or most other man hobbies is that the majority of people think anything less than what they have is junk and anything more than they have is unnecessary and overpriced.

The truth is that people focus on themselves and compare what they have and/or want to others in order to justify their decisions.

The first firearm I bought was a New England Firearms single shot .410- $79.95. The second was a J.C. Higgins model 10, 12 ga for $55. The third was a Marlin 60 for $109.95. Buy what you can afford and that is that. As an aside, making what you make and having the expenses you do, I'm impressed you could save for the gun and LTCH.

But think about this- when you get older and make more, won't you want to buy more expensive guns? I did and you will. Why? Many reasons, but quality and reliability are 2 reasons. Just make sure you remember how you feel now when you're 42 like me and money's not quite the issue it used to be.

As an aside, I still own those guns (I don't believe in selling guns) and am spending about 2 or 3 times the value of the Higgins to restore it....I know, makes no sense.

When I was your age, I bought the gun I could afford. A $200 Rossi .357 revolver. That was what I could afford.

16 years of work and saving later I can buy a HK45 as my edc.

I don't know if I'm a gun snob. I do know it took 16 years to get to where I could afford something like this. You'll get there. Just chill out till then.

I've been in your spot. Young and broke. I kind of equate guns to bikes. Ride or shoot what you can afford. As long as your riding or shooting who cares. A lot of Harley guys look down on others. Just like most gun snobs do too. I guess as people get more success, they forget being in the other position in life. Most people's tastes are a reflection of what they can budget. Don't get down. Keep your head up and you'll come out on top. I'm 35 now and have a decent income. Therefore, I like a little higher quality firearm. However I'll never look down on what someone else is shooting. I'm just glad your shooting at all. I actually respect a guy who had to grind day to day but still sees firearms as something worth saving for. Kudos to you. Not sure where you live, but if you ever want an opportunity at a better paing job pm me. I'm always looking for hard workers that have a good attitude.

Like others are saying you gotta start somewhere. Unless mommy and daddy handed us over cash we've all had to start somewhere. My first gun was a marlin model 60. Definetely not high end but it worked and I shot thousands of rounds out of it. Keep doing what your doing. Work hard, protect your love ones with what you can afford, and shake off the haters bud. I've had $600 dollar guns that we're simply junk.

Wow guys, thanks for the encouragement.Like I said,I love what I have and all of them do the job they're meant to do.It's nice to know that not everyone in the gun world is so stuck up.

I haven't been here long. But you'll find a lot more helpers than haters on here. Nothing wrong with a little good humor but no one on here that's worth talking to will ever give you grief over your firearm choice or budget.

Meh, I got a $500 XDm as my first gun instead of the 1911 I wanted because it's all I could afford. I love my $2700 1911 but I still love my XDm just the same :).

There's a difference between being proud of what you've worked hard to attain, and simply being a snob. Some people are snobs, some are proud, and some simply need to learn some humility.

If you want to see gun snobs hang out at a trap range consisting of the hard core players. They did teach me the art of shooting a shotgun and didn't really pick on my equipment but if you didn't have a 8-15,000 dollar Ljutic or Perazzi you were not serious about shotguns.

Now some advice sonny. :oldwise: ;)

Get what you can afford and don't live beyond your means. If what you have works for you then use it. Anything else is more a "want" than a "need". That goes for homes, vehicles and anything else you can think of.

Support your family first by making sure there's food in the bellies and a roof over their heads. Don't spend up to your level of income as as you progress through life. It irks me to read articles of two income households with a combined income of $200,000 who can't get by. Dumb $%*!s Do they need the McMansion with no furniture and $80,000 vehicle? Don't worry about the "Jones's".

On another note...... It's probably tough right now but start putting a tiny bit away when you can, it doesn't matter how much. Take advantage of compound interest. See how socking away 20 grand over 15 years can turn into 100 grand. :yesway: :): Then if you want go ahead and buy yourself one of those $15,000 Perazzi's. Nope, I didn't.

Of course I'm not wealthy but do have a stable life and a few snob guns.

I'll even save ya some moola in which to kill some time if you are inclined to read. A very old book by wise men. It's so old it's free on the net...

Portraits and principles of the world's great men and women with practical lessons on successful life by over fifty leading thinkers

I have a few expensive firearms and some at the lower end, including a P3AT. Some days it can be really fun to out shoot the elitist guys that think money can buy marksmanship. Practice is more important than having all the finest equipment. Many times the less expensive firearm will shoot just as straight and go off every time anyway. Don't let the high rollers discourage you.

I'm no expert, but that's a little better.
