near Bedford on a whole lot of land.
I went to Bradis yesterday to pick up the RIA 1911 10mm they got in for me (thanks guys!) and while the guy was looking over the 4473 I filled out, he asked me if I had a LTCH. This kinda threw me since I have bought 4-5 handguns from them over the last 5 years, and in buying about 40 different handguns from dealers since the NICS check went into effect and dealers no longer needed to see a LTCH to avoid the waiting period, this was the first time I'd ever been asked to see my LTCH by a dealer.

When I inquired about it, I was told they always did it (did I mention I'd bought several handguns from them in the last five years?). Sure enough there is a space on the 4473 for a LTCH number.

So, is this new policy, old policy that had not been enforced on me there before, or did I just look shady enough that they wanted an extra check? I am deliberately NOT asking in the Bradis forum because I'd like to hear from customers if they have had to show a LTCH at Bradis to buy a handgun.

Yeah, I'm going with shady too.:D

I just bought a new gun last week from a local guy and he didn't ask me anything about my LTCH. I didn't read his portion of the form either, though.

They asked me tge same question. I asked why and was told that they had to "seal" the bag for transportation. Im still waiting on my permit, so this basicall entailed them putting the handgun in a paper bag and stapling it shut for me to take. If i had my permit, then I could carry the gun outright.

I'm not sure the lgality of the situation, but it may let them off of the "hook" if someone bought a pistol and simply just dont know the law as far as transporting and stuff.

Don from Bear arms ask a person that was picking up a handgun that question, the person ask why and Don Explain that he wanted to make sure he was transporting the handgun in a proper way.

    That's it.

We ask because if the customer does not have a LTCH, we need to seal the bag. Otherwise, it has no bearing on the purchase process whatsoever.

What space (they are numbered) is for the LTCH number?

The closest I can find is Question 23.

Yes, it is line 23. Even though the box does not get checked since the IN LTCH does not qualify as a Brady exemption, we still note the number and expiration date if the buyer has one. If he doesn't, or doesn't want to show it, that's fine; we just seal the container.

Keep in mind I wasn't complaining, just curious since in several transactions in the past it'd never come up and when I was told you'd "always done it" that doesn't jibe with my past experience unless "always" means in the last year or two.

Are Indiana LTCH's recognized by the ATF as a valid alternative???

I assume 'seal the container' is just company policy? Is that a stapled bag, or something else?

Just wondering. I've never been asked or had anything done other than hand me the box/bag and receipt.

FWIW, I've bought handguns from Bradis and never had that question asked. Not sure if an unsealed cardboard box would count as a secure wrapper or not.

    Depends

If we are selling a long gun we generally don't ask if you have a LTCH. If you are purchasing a handgun then we generally ask so we know how to send the firearm out the door. It has no bearing on the purchasing at all.

We used to put them in a bag and staple it shut which was enough to satisfy most LEO. We have begun using a Zip-tie to make it a little more secure

A few years ago it was, however Indiana does not do one of the Federal background checks that are required to meet the ATF "valid alternative" requirements. Don't know whether it was due to costs or time constraints but Indiana did drop the check! I can remember purchasing handguns with my Pink slip a few years ago at GS's with no NCIS check.
