I've started really thinking about it.
I'm not quite ready, but my other Hobby (Ham Radio) has a strong focus on when SHTF. We (ham radio ops) were there for Katrina, 911, etc. etc. etc.

I know that my personal Bug Out Kit, will include three firearms. Each of extremely common Caliber. .45acp, 12 gauge, and .223 Rem. I figure it can't hurt to carry three of the most common caliber weapons in this country. Makes finding ammo in a pinch easier than if I have a 5.7x28 PS90 I'm trying to feed.

I should go through the ARES / RACES disaster preparedness documents, and list here what they claim is vitally important in a disaster kit. I'll post it back here.

These are both geared towards Ham Radio Operators Actually going into an affected area with the intent of assisting relief efforts. (Usually by providing communications for rescue workers etc.) However many of the items they want you to have apply for SHTF and you're Bugging out.

Wisconsin ARES Ultimate Go Kit (PDF)

12 Hour Deployment Gear (Word Document)

I might suggest those REALLY worried about SHTF consider actually getting a Ham Radio License and gear. If anyone is interested, I'd be willing to help study for the tests. I could also be convinced to bring some of my gear to an IN Gun Owners picnic and demo some of what can be done.

The problem is covering all eventualities. IMHO
    Will your house be usable?
Will you be forced to Bug Out?

there are so many ways things can go bad, starting with a gas shortage to war.

You said it right there. Gotta have more than one plan B. Let us not forget that in New Orleans they confiscated all firearms.

There is a great video of a VERY old woman being tackled by NO cops. Check that one out. They told her to leave, and she replied that she had plenty of food and a gun. Then BAM! She is in the corner on the floor.

There are so many websites out there dedicated to SHTF, it's insane. I'm no survivalist, but it's really got me starting to think and picking up things that I've been neglecting in my own household. Stuff like flashlights, extra batteries, crank NOAA radio, etc. I'm in the (slow) process of cleaning up the basement so that I actually have storage for somemore SHTF supplies...

Thanks for the link Ryan, just added it to my favorites list.
I have enough food and water for about 72 hours most of the time. Always have guns & ammo.;)
