A friend and I hiked Deam this past weekend and I managed to remember to take a few pictures so I thought I would share.

I realized on the way down that they had gotten more snow than I thought.

We decided to take the sycamore loop from the trail head at the Fire tower. Friday night we stuck to one of the designated spots along the way.

This was my attempt at making feather sticks and shavings for tinder. It helped get the fire going but I never did get it lit straight from the firesteel. I ended up using one of my cotton/vaseline fire starters.

We got to the site later than we had hoped so we tried to collect firewood while it was still light and had to set up after dark.

A little bit of backpacker's pantry Beef and Broccoli stir-fry. This went on my 'don't buy again' list.

Nothing like a fire on a cold night

I normally take a GSI micro dualist pot/bowl set when I go but this time I left it at home in favor of this Stanley pot that I found at wal-mart. It was only $15 and is stainless steel. I would never put my GSI directly in the fire but this one doesn't bother me. I used it this way for pretty much everything. I think we only broke out the stove once and that was to melt some snow for water.

Don't put your plastic coffee press too close to the fire. It will melt!

I watched this great youtube video about making bacon and eggs in a paper bag so we decided to try it out. Here is the bacon lined up in the bottom waiting for the eggs

    IMAG1063_zpsrpvf1cvh.jpg

Then we dumped in a few eggs and hung them over the fire

They were cooking pretty slowly so we ended up just resting them right on the coals

Here is the final result. Some scambled eggs and some pretty mushy bacon (it still tasted great)

The rest of the bacon got cooked up right over the fire - much better this way.

The second night we went off trail near Terril ridge. We had more time Saturday night and took the opportunity to collect plenty of wood. I had to scrounge for wood saturday morning since we had run out during the night.

This picture is from the wrong side but there is a nice little pond right behind us. There are some really nice spots to camp out there.

That's it. Only a Friday afternoon through Sunday trip but enough time to do about 6 or 7 miles and get some good camping in.

That is good stuff, right there. Thanks for taking the time to post pics! Can't say as I like winter camping, but I've done quite a bit over the years and it is fun to talk about when you're inside and warm.

Looks like fun! Thanks for the pics. I've been doing quite a bit of hiking in the snow this past month but can't get many takers to go with me. The woods are so quiet when there's a good snow on its a totally different place than when it's warm.

I think the best part of winter is the absence of bugs. I'm not a huge fan of ticks and mosquitoes and Deam has plenty of both in the summer. One other cool thing was all of the wildlife tracks. Noone had hiked the trail since the last snowfall so the animal tracks were clear. You could easily see where the deer had come in, followed the trail, foraged for food, etc.
