Finally received a response to the email I sent to Sen. Coats

    Dear Kevin:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the proposed ban on certain ammunition by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). I appreciate this opportunity to respond.

The Law Enforcement Officers Protection Act of 1985 (LEOPA) intended to ban "armor piercing" ammunition (AP ammo) to protect police from harm. However, rifle ammunition used for recreational purposes can penetrate soft body armor. Subsequently, the ATF interpreted LEOPA to exempt rifle ammunition used for "sporting purpose s " from the definition of AP ammo. Since 1986, this exemption has included 7N6 rifle ammunition and M855 ball ammunition.

Having tried and failed to enact an outright ban on the AR-15 rifle, the Obama Administration now appears to be attempting to make it obsolete by banning some of the most common rifle ammunition on the market. On February 13, 2015, the ATF issued a report that proposed to ban M855 ball ammunition by classifying it as AP ammo.

Should the ATF ban be approved, the sale of commonly sold rifle ammunition used by gun owners for hunting, target shooting, and self-defense will be prohibited. The ban would suppress usage of AR-15s and other .223 caliber general purpose rifles by outlawing the most popular ammunition in the United States.

Several of my colleagues and I have sent a letter to th e ATF expressing our concerns regarding the ammunition ban and encouraging the ATF to withdraw its proposal. I continue to hold to my oath to support and defend our nation's Constitution. I will not support any legislation or regulations that would undermine the Second Amendment. I am a proud supporter of gun rights and will oppose any gun control measure such as this that infringes upon ownership rights for responsible, law abiding citizens. I will be sure to keep your concerns about ATF regulations in mind should the Senate consider legislation addressing the agency.

Thank you again for contacting me, and please do not hesitate to do so in the future on other matters of concern to you.

    Sincerely,

I wonder if they're going to shutdown the website updates again this weekend. You know with the sequester and all.

Maybe we should go back to laws being made by elected officials.

Oh, sure, there you go advocating for such archaic concepts as representative government.
You probably even think highly of such silly documents as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, too.

    Faxed.

Received the same reply from Coats. Nice to see the response actually reflected the issues.
"I will be sure to keep your concerns about ATF regulations in mind should the Senate consider legislation addressing the agency. "

This is the money line from the Coats release. This is what is sorely needed IMO. Congress needs to get involved and take on the BATF overreach in conjuction with the Executive office for political purposes, but alas it will probably only amount to lip service and won't go any further than a mass email response.

The same argument could be made for voting. The point isn't that it's effective. It is one more outlet that should not be ignored, and should not fail.

If all the INGO members signed this petition, or wrote to their Congress critters, that would be a force to be reckoned with. Except...

This right here. We must fight them on every battlefield. Concede no ground and give no quarter, for these are our sacred rights that we are talking about. Rights that were bought with the blood and treasure of countless of our ancestors.

I'm not knocking the petition as long as it actually does something other than make those signing it feel better.
(I just signed it, if it makes you feel better.)
Got any links to the results? Who is reading it? Who is using it to change the ATF overreach?

Letters to congress have produced replies. Replies mean that the voting public is heard and understood. This may or may not get the desired results, but it shows accountability is acknowledged.

It is the avenue that was given by the white house for the public to raise concerns it had with issues. The threshold was set at 100,000 signatures. If that threshold is not reached, it will not be view as having enough support to elicit a responce. The ban is not a lawful ban due to the fact that projectile does not meet the AP definition. There should never have needed to be a exemption for it in the first place.

How stupid are people? They aren't even panic buying correctly.

Leaving Cabelas now; they have 100 round limit on all 5.56/.223.

The kicker? They have thousands of rounds of M855 and no brass cased .223. This is so stupid and so is everyone panic buying.

Read more than the headlines people! They even had articles posted explaining the proposal. SMH....

And no I wasn't there to panic buy, I went for a Magpul QD cup and QD swivels, and i picked up 20rds of 7.62x39 and 20rds of steel cased .223 because I've never tried it in my ARs.
