I IWB carry most of the time in a crossbreed super tuck. After watching the alleged gun grab video in another thread by the suspect "Pat", it brought some questions to mind.

I am hoping to take some classes on weapons retention strategies, but I have to deal with the me in the mirror right now.
I am middle-aged , overweight and out of shape, so I think I would need something that allows me to quickly react to an assailant with more experience street fighting but not a lot of training because the longer the fight goes, my chances of success will diminish exponentially. I looked at martial arts classes and karate is within 30 min of me, BJJ is within an hour and krav maga is a 90 min drive, all one way. It seemed the KM would be most beneficial for the guy in the mirror right now and his needs, but the time commitment is so huge that I have doubts I would stick with it.

What classes on retention strategies would you recommend?
What martial arts system would you recommend if time was not a factor, if time were a factor?

Does Indiana code define concealed carry?

My crossbreed holster has no retention. Is there even such a thing as a retention holster IWB?

I also "CC" by wearing my Safariland OWB with retention. If a criminal were on the look out for CC weapons to steal, he would probably notice the bulge but most people don't pay that any attention. Which should concern me more, the positives of deeper concealment or the positives of retention?

I OC rarely, but I most often chooses to do it at large public events, like town festivals etc, that usually have a large police presence. The reason I do this is more to be an ambassador for the 2A and the NRA or Appleseed or whatever t-shirt I am wearing. It has yet to get me visited by police, but has struck up positive conversation with those around me who notice.

Finally the infamous concealed carry badge. Currently I do not own one, but a coworker does and he gave me a scenario justifying it. His I found to be lacking, but As with any tool, perhaps there is a use for this one.

    HIS:

Defusing a situation where a shooting occurs on the front lawn and he would throw it to the responding cop. I could see his reasoning but that officer could get into real trouble if he trusts too much in th a t.

    HOWEVER MINE:

I class I took had a scenario where a UNIFORMED security officer offered assistance to an LEO in a active gunfight after asking the officer if he needed assistance. If I, in street clothes pulled over in my car to offer assistance and jumped out offering it with one of those badges displayed vs not, would it matter? My gut tells me it would because, this LEO is actively getting shot at and probably would not inspect the badge too closely, but that the badge would provide a similar display of I am on your side as the uinform did and perhaps allay any concern that I am in some partnership with the bad guy.

So far this is the only type of scenario I can really see a possibe positive use of a Cc badge.

    Your thoughts?

If you throw anything at me when I respond to a shooting, we're going to have problems. The only use for a CCW badge is to look like a tool, not to use it as one. No cop is going to catch what you throw, look at it, say "Gosh, a badge any tool can buy online, this must be a good guy in a good shoot!" What he's going to see is a guy with a gun throwing something at him. That's going full retard. Don't do it.

No, the badge doesn't matter in that scenario either. I know the guy who taught that class :D and he's had civilians offer to help him in lesser situations and had them get handcuffs off his belt while he held someone down, etc.

Just say no to CCW badges. It makes you look like a whacker (aka borderline police impersonator) and has zero use.

The Indiana Code does NOT define CC because in Indiana there is no such requirement. A LTCH is a license to carry............the method of carry doesn't matter and isn't specified. Like anyone here can tell you open/concealed/taped to your forehead are all acceptable methods of "carrying" a handgun in Indiana.

IC does not defined "concealed" as there is no crime associated with not having it concealed.

Retention comes in different flavors. I am not a fan of thumb snaps on concealed holsters. Moving the cover garment and then having to hit a thumb snap in my attempts to make it work has been inconsistent at "OH POO!!!" speeds. I've heard good things about the ALS style retention but have not tried it. Most gun grabs come from behind, 6 o'clock to 4 o'clock for the righty. A forward cant makes it harder to remove from behind, as does a quality holster designed for that particular gun (as opposed to Uncle Mikes #7 or the like). I don't know if there is any difference between leather and kydex.

One of the advantages of the old traditional 3 o' clock carry is your elbow naturally hangs over the gun, making it harder to lift a cover garment and snake in, and also allowing you to clamp down on the gun quickly and twist forward to break an opponent's grasp and get it out of his reach. One of the advantages of appendix carry is it can't be reached from behind, but it is easier to grab from the front, so trade off there.

    Indiana does not define "concealed".

Don't think I've seen an IWB retention holster. I also have a crossbreed, and I'm not all that worried about it. My daily-wear a a leather OWB with a thumb strap (flame away). I should probably take a force-on-force class as well, and practice weapon retention. I've started thinking about a new holster, too. This one is several years old, and getting worn.

CCW Badge? Good grief, no. If a responding officer needs ANYTHING like that, it would be your LTCH. A ccw badge means nothing.

Toy badges are silly, at best a bad idea, and might even be offensive to a police officer. You have an LTCH, that's all you need to be legal (whether on your person or not).

I equate CC badges with anal fissures. They are both equally useful and you will get the same response from and officer if they see either one.

CC badge? Not just no, but hell no.

As for CCW retention, I think if a criminal sees you are carrying CC and he wants to take your gun, he'll likely already be armed and simply rob you with a weapon drawn.

I seriously doubt attempted gun grabs of concealed firearms is a realistic threat. If I were a criminal I wouldn't try to wrestle a gun away from someone if I was unarmed.

Pulling out a CC badge could also introduce humor to what might be a very tense moment. :dunno:
