    Like a rubber projectile?

For the purpose of self-defense, if it needs shot it needs killed. If it doesn't need killed, it doesn't need shot.

Or do you mean the solid rubber rounds they use for training malfunction drills?

I can't speak for riot control or anything like that, but if someone needs shooting why would you want to just make them mad?

Does anyone have experience with these?

Pretty vague question, what is the purpose? I've considered using rubber/plastic/paint rounds for training but the cost is usually pretty high compared to shooting lead.

If it for defense then I agree with the above answers. Could be good for chasing off nuisance animals in town but I would just get a pellet gun for that.

Imagine a 17 year old who's had a rough go of it and wandered down the wrong path. He's gotten into drugs and gangs. He finds himself inside my house trying to steal my tv - or whatever.

If I can help it Im not killing this kid.

The trouble with "non-lethal" rounds is sometimes they are and sometimes they aren't.

The day that you want it to be "non-lethal" and just "sting a little" it will kill someone due to shot placement, underlying medical conditions, etc. The day that you need it to be lethal, it won't be.

Might not be a terrible idea for the chambered round. That way you can carry chambered and an accidental discharge won't be lethal and you get one "warning" shot.

    Then don't? :dunno:

Just let him take your tv or whatever and let him leave.
When he understands you are cooperating and he is able to act with impunity he will see the error of his ways and leave you unharmed never to return.

If you feel threatened, you should act accordingly.

If you don't feel threatened and this "kid" is just stealing, then you don't have cause to shoot.

Very likely he'd just attack you. Anything with enough power to stop him is lethal. Anything weak enough not to be lethal won't put him down long enough to keep him from ending your life.

Unfortunately he has made his choice when he broke in. If you want to try and avoid killing him, lock yourself in your bedroom, call 911, and have your handgun loaded with real ammunition. If he decides to just take the TV and leave, so be it. If he attempts to break the door down to get at you he has violated the second chance you gave him and his life is forfeit by his own actions.

I'd prefer to not kill anyone too. Especially if they're just taking a tv. However, I use real ammo, because if I need to shoot then the threat must be stopped, not irritated.

I have a plan. With the layout of my house I have a very viable choke point. Come through that part of my house and get shot with lead. Everything important in my house (people and animals) are likely to be behind that point. Stuff like my tv is not.

I understand not wanting to kill, but handicapping yourself in your own home is a bad idea. What happens if it isn't a 17 year old kid? What if it's a 200 lb 6'3" rapist or killer? How quickly can you change your ammo from rubber to hollow points?

I think BogWalker summed it up well: "Anything with enough power to stop him is lethal. Anything weak enough not to be lethal won't put him down long enough to keep him from ending your life."

Don't listen to those guys. I load up rubber 9mm all the time for the same use.

I can sell you as many of these specially-made 9mm rubber bullets that you want.

They'll cost you two bucks apiece (actually they come in pairs, so four bucks for two), but their well worth it.
