I just saw an SUV with this on it. Lights, 911, etc. protect and serve.

is this literally some railroad thing or a town I haven't heard of?

Dude, RR police have more power than most other police though there's just not that many of them. Their jurisdictional boundaries are almost non-existent since the RR goes everywhere. They're kind of like the DNR cops that everyone sleeps on. "You're just a ranger, you can't mess with me." Nunh uh... they can arrest you everywhere!

    It's a thing. It's real. They're out there.

....though they generally don't wander too far off the RR since they don't have much to do in the way of "law enforcement" (aka revenue generation) and therefore leave most common subjects alone.

Yep, RR police have been around forever. Actually you might be surprised at how much theft from trains takes place. They also investigate deaths from trains, de-railings and a host of other criminal activities.

My friend retired from IMPD and works for them. He investigates all their thefts, derailments, ect for several states. Basically any police issue on their property and rail right-of-way.
