So what is the difference between moonshine and whiskey?

You can legally create the alcohol through fermentation without government permits. You cannot then distill that alcohol for any reason without one. With a permit you can either denature it and sell it untaxed or sell it taxed, lots of paperwork and records involved.

I love bourbon as do several here. I am mesmerized by the processes through which an unpalatable distillation is put in barrels, left in Gods hands for a period of time, and out comes delishness…

The trick with bourbon and good whiskey is what comes after the alcohol is distilled. I'm currently in an experiment where I'm using pharmaceutical grade (tax paid) alcohol to make bourbon without the barrel. I'm using caramelized white oak shavings from chain saw cutting of the wood in glass containers.

Interesting. How long do you plan to age?

I believe there are products labeled “moonshine” sold in liquor stores…
Yep. Labeled. There isn't any regulation on what it has to be called/named. Here is a kinda interesting article about it.

Short time I'm hoping. The aging is related to the trips the alcohol makes into the oak barrel and back out again. I experimenting with speeding that process up by increasing the surface area of the charred oak relative to the amount of liquid.

I got the idea when cutting white oak for firewood, I may not work, but I don't have a lot invested. Fun to experiment though.:)

But ... but ... it's going to provide tax revenues ... and end the black market ... and break the back of the Mexican cartels ... :coffee:
Did you actually read the article or just google "bad pot articles" and paste the link? Cause this isnt a negative side effect of legalization, it is the consequence of .gov overreach. By making it so expensive to run an above board business, it is creating a black market that is undercutting legal sales. Legal sales are still good. Section 280E of the tax code prohibits anyone in the industry from writing off anything other than Cost of Goods Sold, and the tax rates are astronomical. That drives prices way up, which encourages corruption. Did you expect the cartel to just go away? Didn't expect them to adapt at all? If there is a loophole, criminals will exploit it.

I have no interest in debating anyone's personal opinion of cannabis, or anyone who uses it. I dont care about anyone's brother who got stoned in '74 and never amounted to anything. That is likely due to very poor genetics. If someone is an ******* when they are drunk, chances are they are an ******* sober too. Many people benefit from cannabis, and they shouldn't have to explain themselves to anyone not involved in their medical decisions. It is so arrogant and uneducated to discredit any medical uses because there are also non-medical uses. "Those dang kids having uncontrollable seizures just want to get loaded and eat Funyuns!"

Legalization WILL happen and Indiana needs to put a plan in place now to get ahead of it. Imagine the chaos that will happen when it gets recheduled federally and there is no structure at the state level to regulate it. Rivers can be dangerous, people can drown in them. But you can also harness their power and use that energy for good. Really the only debate left is how should the state handle legalization. Colorado has allowed sales for 10 years already! The statistics are out there, we know the mistakes that were made by certain states, now all we need to do is make an informed decision on how to allow cultivation, processing, and retail.

I've heard of people doing this. One thing I've heard that helps is putting the jars where there is a decent swing in temperatures. Part of what drives it in and out of the wood is temp changes. I was told attic is decent, warms up during the day and cools off at night. The guy uses wood chips meant for smoking and chars them.

Some of the many ... err ... partial, suspect 'truths' that are being used to sell this idea - many in this very thread - are all about how tax revenue will benefit government (state and federal, I guess) and how it will end smuggling and break the power of the cartels

California is probably the biggest and loosest market of all those states that have legalized, and it is apparent not a single one of those claimed 'benefits' of legalization is going to happen

It is quite amusing to see the same forum claiming vast tax benefits from legalizing then shift to claiming it is being taxed too much, all the while enabling the cartels to shorten their supply chain - and yes, I read the article one day on Real Clear and bookmarked it for later use in this thread

That is why I liken legalization to the lottery, lots of ... overly optimistic 'promises', shall we say ... used as a sales pitch and then almost nothing gets delivered

What does a strong, escapist desire to go through life stoned, a willingness to risk career and freedom, say about 'genetics'

    Probably evolutionary cul de sac

Tax revenue isnt the point of legalization. I know how you like control, but the point is freedom. Some people benefit from something that is OBVIOUSLY way above your comprehension. Your constant attempts to turn it into a desire to be "stoned" are infantile. Not everything makes you feel high. CBD relieves symptoms of many ailments, including arthritis, certain pain, anxiety, etc, but contains no THC and has no psychoactive properties. CBN is being marketed as a sleep aid, similar to melatonin. CBG is next. There is significant scientific data backing this stuff up, stuff that YOU cannot refute. You are so hung up on people getting "high" that you are blind to the benefits, which is why nobody here actually takes you seriously. Reefer Madness at its absolute worst. That is the end of my conversation with you, I am obviously not going to change your opinion, and you also have zero influence on Indiana legislation. This conversation is more productive without you involved.

It means that I am wondering if you are a shill account for another foaming at the mouth legalizer who self-combusted

I save logical responses for those who pose logical speculation. 'I want weed legalized because I want to get loaded' doesn't rise to that standard. I notice you didn't/couldn't refute the information in the citation so attacked me for posting it as well as questioning my motivation - as if that affected the veracity of the story

I'm a shill account, huh? Cool story.

Nothing I said had anything to do with getting loaded. Its about science and medicine. You are completely off base. I refuted the content in your actual link. You havent had an answer to anything I've said other than accusing millions of people of only wanting to "get loaded" instead of seeking medical help for legitimate health conditions. I have no time for self-absorbed people like you. If anyone else would like to have an actual discussion, I'm in. But you are going on the block list.
