I load 77g SMKs but usually with Varget. I don't have a chrony. Mine seem to shoot the best groups with 23.9g loaded to 2.26 OAL. I shoot mine from an 18" LaRue Stealth barrel. Varget usually isn't known for speed. If you want a little more velocity, especially out of a 16" you might wanna try ReloaderAnyone else loading these 77gr smk (no cannelure)
I’ve got a very accurate load with a 16” wylde chamber JP rifles.
24.0gr varget/2.255 coal/ cci400
Seems a little slow though imo.
2590 avg.
What powders, barrels, velocities are you all seeing?
Thanks in advance.
Please cite your source for the info that any of the production Mk 262 Mod x ammunition has used Nosler CC or Berger 77s.I ran a check on 77 grain OTM match bullets, Nosler, Sierra and Berger. I couldn't get any Barnes or Lapua to check. All are the same base to ogive measurement, but slight difference in OAL. All have been used in the 262 load for the government. Open tips, (Hollow points) vary slightly and that why they use a different bullet pointing punch. Sierra and Lapua use the same punch (b-6 and Berger B-16)
This is news to me as well…Please cite your source for the info that any of the production Mk 262 Mod x ammunition has used Nosler CC or Berger 77s.
Very interesting. The accuracy I get out of the 77gr smk would be hard to beat. Atleast with varget it’s been greatMy sources at Crane gave me the following for you.
Cartridge, Caliber 5.56 mm, Special Ball, Long Range, Mk 262 MOD 0/1: 5.56×45mm 77-grain Open-Tipped Match/Hollow-Point Boat-Tail cartridge. MOD 0 features Sierra Matchking bullet, while MOD 1 features either Nosler or Sierra bullet. What we buy is Mk 262 MOD 1 -C (for commercial) it uses any of the three bullets as supplies of the bullets vary due to demand. Sierra with it's production of bullets for MK316 mod 0/1 and soon 2 which is the only bullet used in that loading.
