    I'm going to throw my hat in with the others recommending the Walther P22.....

    My boys enjoy shooting it and I enjoy helping them learn firearms safety and function.

    I would also recommend the P22. Great size for small hands, little recoil, and a good project if you want to apply the "P22 Bible" to it. Make sure to use decent ammo in it, though. It doesn't like Federal or Blazer (weak blowback will cause ejection issues). Remington Golden Bullets work great in it.
