Along with my 12ga shotgun, my father decided he needed back his .22 rifle after 8+ years of leaving them with me. SO here I sit down 2 guns and not sure where to go.

I am looking for a new semi-auto .22 rife. Wife loves to shoot it and thats a good thing for me! Would prefer a magazine fed gun, with option / comes with a decent scope etc.

Saw that ruger on sale at Dick's I believe...Any good? Just want a good .22 rifle that I can throw a ton of lead down range and have good fun with it.

I'd take a good look at the Marlin 795. They are magazine fed, very accurate, and can be had all day long for $150. I bought mine on sale for $119 earlier this year. There are a ton of aftermarket parts for them if you want to change the trigger/stock/sights/etc. My good friend chudly has one as well and he has put a TON of ammo through his with no problems whatsoever. I also think the stock trigger on the 795 is far better than the stock trigger on the 10/22. I hope this helps!

Don't for get to check out the Marlin 60. They are reliable and a lot of fun. Not a bunch of after market like the Ruger, just a solid choice for a plinker.

Just get a Henry rifle and be done with your selection. There are a few used ones out there as a sign most owner's keep them forever and don't get rid of them.

Another vote for the Marlin 795. It'll get outvoted by the 10/22, but in many ways I think the 795 is the better low cost plinking rifle. Scoped up and ready to go, it's going to be hard to spend more than $150. It doesn't have as much aftermarket support as the Ruger (although its getting better), but the 795 will outshoot rifles that cost 3x as much.

The Ruger is a good choice too, its just more expensive to start with and gives away a little "out of the box" accuracy to the Marlin. It's much more suited to modification than the Marlin is though.

    Not far from the tree
10/22 platform is a good starting place for a plinker. Customizable if you find you need more accuracy or a different fitment of stock.
Another one to consider is Primary Weapons Systems makes a straight pull biathlon style action that will accept 10/22 bbls, stocks, magazines and trigger groups. I made an HM2 out of the one I bought.

Marlins are great guns for the money. If you goto a gun show you can snag Marlin 60s for 120-160 all day long. The 795 is another great gun.
I got rid of my Ruger 10/22 and haven't missed it a bit.

What did you have before? Ruger is probably the most versatile but Marlin, Winchester, Remington and CZ have all made decent 22s.

i still have to say 10/22.. there are alot of good low priced .22's on the market and while the 10/22 is not the most accurate out of the box .22 it does it's job. Its a very fun plinker to shoot, lots of aftermarket parts, and i can cycle the cheapest of ammo all day long without any problems so it makes it the perfect plinker for me.

The 10/22 is a great shooter out of the box. It just depends on the shooter as to how accurate you are. Plenty of aftermarket parts available to dress it up the way you like or prefer too.

If you just want something that's cheap and accurate, go Marlin 795.

If you want something that's accurate and can be modified 7 different ways from Sunday, go 10/22.
