    Hey guys,

I'm new to 5.56/.223 - just got my first AR-15 yesterday and, as such, I have no idea what 'normal' pricing for this ammunition was before the 'panic' and what most would consider reasonable at this point and/or a good deal.

I did buy some 5.56 last year for a friend's AR-15 so I could put some rounds through it, but I don't remember what I paid.

    Any advice is appreciated :).

PSA has been selling it off & on for .60 a round. That's about it unless you luck into some Walmart ammo.

What does Wal-Mart charge? I know my chances of finding any there are slim to none - but just curious as to the cost per round for comparison sake.

Trying to get a feel for what's a good deal, what's 'normal', and what's overpriced so I, at least, know what it is I'm buying.

Tulammo steel case is $5-$6 a box. Brass cased, $8-$9 a box

Pre-panic I would say $6-8 per 20 would be decent. Now I look at PPR. .60-.65¢ PPR is about all I'll pay.

For what it's worth, the lower priced brass cased stuff was going for between $300 on a good day to $400 before the panic.

I can shoot .223 but I would prefer 5.56 - eventually I'll have my own loads [reloader] and like the flexibility of everywhere from low-end 2.23 to high-end 5.56 as the cases can handle it.

To be honest the going rate is $10-12 for a box of 20 it seems.
My local shop is selling it for $10. Now ore panic you would pay $6-8 a box.
Most expensive I've bought post panic was some Winchester 556 and paid $15 for it but just one box.

Ive bought about 2500 rounds of 5.56 for average of .44 cents a round through the panic and I wont pay more. Most I paid was for 200 rounds of Vmax 40GR AM 223 just because I wanted some hunting ammo for 12$ a box.

It's funny. Before the 2008 panic, you could buy it for around 20 cents/rd. After the panic, it was 30-40 cents. People said "I'm not paying more than 40 cents". Now, people's bottom price is 50-60 cents. 200% to 300% more than what you paid in 2008 and 2009. Everyone thinks prices will come back down to pre-panic levels, but they won't and they never will as long as people are willing to pay "panic prices, minus just a few cents to make it look like prices came down".
