I just got my MGM 257 Weatherby barrel for my T/C Pro Hunter. Getting ready to start working up a load. Just wondering if anybody had a pet 257 load for a starting point. Looks like a good powder to start with is IMR 4831, of coarse I don't have any. Something else to buy.:dunno:

I don't remember how much powder I used, but I was getting almost 3600fps with Reloader22 under a 100gr Nosler BT. It was an absolute laser against Antelope all the way out to 800yds or so. It was pretty close to a max load though.

75 grains of Reloader 22 gets a moly coated 85 TTSX nudging 3800 fps in both the 257 Wbys I have left.

Lots of boom, but serious medicine for anything you might point it at.

While either flavor of 4831, along with RL22, will make useful loads with the 257 Weatherby, you're really better off with even slower powders. H1000 is a good choice, as is IMR 7828. If you can get your hands on MRP 2, it has a near-optimum burn rate for this highly over-bore cartridge.

I hope you got a 26" or 28" barrel, to make the most of this big-jugged quarter-bore. :)

Holy Moly, and I thought RL22 was slow enough!!! Oh well, yes the .257Weatherby is good for anything from 'lopes to smallish elk. Never took an elk with it, but the ex-wife did once. She loved that Weatherby, as it's really light on recoil also. If you're going for bigger animals, you might want to take a hard look at the Nosler 120gr partitions, they work very well and have no problem giving an inch at 100yds.

26" Barrel Thanks for the input. I have never seen MRP 2.
