Purple, then blue, then grey, then that weird greenish yellow...

    True dat
Reminds me of the time that I gave myself a black eye by accident when I ducked after tapping on my friend's house window as a silly little prank and slammed my eye socket on the stone ledge outside the window...HARD.
My eye socket actually turned all those colors over the next month, exactly as you described them.

I shoot a fair of 3 1/2 shells every year, last year I probably shot around 200. They do kick a bit, but I don't find them to be too bad, when hunting I don't notice it at all really. That being said, I only use them for geese most of the time and rarely ducks. 3" shells will work just fine for them but I like to say it's like buying a Ferrari and putting 87 octane in it... If it can do it, why not use it. I have a friend who only runs 3's all year and has the 3 1/2" ability. It's all what a guy wants, I honestly just like the idea of more pellets.

Like CM said though, getting your friends to shoot them... It's always great to sneak one in when out shooting some clays with friends, it's just a surprise and nothing more. The most fun is dumping the bb's and replacing them with feathers!

Some of you guys are dumber then I thought. Here is how it is done.

Me: Hey, you ever sight in a fancy slug gun?
    Victim: No.
Me: Well come on, let's go. It's a blast.

    Later that day.

Victim: Man I am done. I can't shoot any more.
Me: That's ok. I wanted to get 10 rounds on target and you did 7, I can do the rest.
Victim: I thought you said this was fun?
Me: No, I said it was a blast. That stuff you feel right now in your shoulder, I call that blast.

"INGO let me tell you about my best friend....
It's little yellow shell, it won't beat me
    my shoulder all to Hell...

INGO Let me tell you about my best friend....
It's a 20 gauge shotgun shell and it doesn't beat me
    all to hell......

INGO did you know that the natives and the pioneers?????
Killed each other and lots of game
    With 20 bore fowlers and
The turkey and people died just the same..."

I am just saying....Outside of duck and geese (due to the shot restrictions) most folks would do just fine with a 20 gauge shotgun...Your shoulder will love you for it......

i think you are exactly right.

40 years and 90 lbs ago, a "friend" introduced me to shot gunning with a 10 ga. And a clay thrown directly overhead.

    Broke my nose.

no desire to shoot anything over 20 ga since.

I say go big or stay home...that's the mentality of America. I promise you if and when they make 4 inch magnum shells and guns, people will race to buy them. Probably myself included...lol
