Also consider barrel profile. Since Grendel is often marketed as a “long range caliber” they often come in a heavy profile barrel, which adds a lot of unnecessary weight to a hunting rifle IMO. All of mine have been parts builds for this reason.

Ill look into it, I've never messed with building an upper from scratch. Messing with the gas system has always intimidated me for some reason.
Not as hard as you think. There are some great YouTube videos for building uppers and lowers...especially the ones from Larry Potterfield (Midway USA Founder).

If you can turn a wrench, you can build an upper. They are very easy. Get an adjustable gas block and you're set. I use this one, but there are plenty of options.

My favorite handguard is this one.
Lightweight, locks up solid, and easy to install because the barrel but doesn't have to be clocked to accept the gas tube. The other advantage is that the tools needed are included.

I'll second this. The Atlas S-One is a supurb handguard....lightweight, thin, durable, and best of all, rail where you need it and not where you don't. Not too horrible spendy for what you get, either. If I'm building a free-float AR, it always gets an S-One.

My 9 year old son used a 357 Maximum to shoot his first deer this year. I loaded subsonic rounds using Viht Tin Star and a Accurate 220gr LHP PC'd and cast at 10BHN. MV is 1160fps. He won't take a shot over 50 yds until he can demonstrate shooting proficiency at any greater distance. He doesn't like the recoil impulse of the 6.5 Grendel and we tried a bolt action and an AR.

My vote would be for the 350 Legend in an AR or bolt gun or the 357 Magnum or Maximum in a single shot. With the latter, 38 Special ammo can be used for practice.

    Happy Holidays!

I'm starting to plan for next deer season, and I think my son will be ready to hunt with my. He will be almost 10 and is a great shot with his .22 already with open sights. My issue is that currently I only have a 7mm-08, a 12 guage, and a muzzeloader for deer and my son is way way on the small side for his age.

So I am narrowing my options down to a 300 blackout, 6.5 grendel, or a .44 magnum lever gun. I have been leaning towards the 300 blackout since I have a lower ready anyway and I could put a suppressor on it since he doesn't care for loud noises even with ear muffs on. I also like the 6.5 Grendel because eventually he could reach out farther as his confidence builds. The .44 magnum is on the list just because it seems like the standard first deer rifle around here and I've always wanted to add a lever gun to my collection anyway.

Any thought on these or are there any others I should be looking at?
I have all 3 calibers. hunting environment is a key factor. Distance, field-woods, all make a huge difference and that is why I have all. Henry 44; 10.5” ar 300 pistol; 18” ar grendel..
    Field - 100 yards and less - 300.
Woods 50 yds - 44 lever is a good fast platform.
    Field 100-300+ yds- Grendel only

My second vote would be for the 300BLK. Hornady make a powerhouse subsonic load, the 190gr Sub-X. They and others make stellar supersonic loads. Barnes 110gr TAC-TX is superb.

I will follow up on my 7.62X39 BCA upper.

BCA "can" make some good uppers and most run a little over MOA...I was lucky with mine being sub MOA but I a have a friend with the same upper that is 3 MOA. Out of a 10.5" barrel using cheap Russian ammo still not terrible but does show the production inconsistencies.
