I read somewhere that .308 and military 7.62 ammo isnt interchangable due to headspace or some such.

Anyone know the skinny on this?

I recently bought a socom2 and have been shooting store bought .308...is this a bad idea due to ^

I would assume my SA is chambered for mil spec ammo, but I don't know for sure.

The SA Socom 2 is chambered .308 Winchester.
I will refer you to this website for further info. http://www.thegunzone.com/30cal.html

    Note this key part:
But as Clint McKee and Walter Kuleck of Fulton Armory note on their "award-winning" website:
They are the same, 'cause nobody makes 7.62mm (NATO) ammo that isn't to the .308 "headspace" dimension spec. So 7.62mm ammo fits nicely into .308 chambers, as a rule.

7.62x51mm (7.62 NATO) is loaded to a lower pressure than .308 WIN.

It matters if you have an old gun like and Ishapore.

    M1A ammo?

Here is an email exerpt from SAInc. concerning what ammo is safe in the M1As:

We would recommend 168 grain Federal Match or Black Hills ammunition for the best accuracy.
You can use .308 factory ammunition made to SAAMI spec.
You can also use 7.62 x 51 military surplus ammunition with the NATO stamp on it.
You can use anywhere from 147-180 grain ammunition – nothing over 180 grain.
Thank you for your interest in Springfield.
