I shoot a good mix of 200’s and 250-ish grainers in my 45’s. I do like the thump of full power loads but for plinking, a good lighter load is fun as well. I have a decent supply of 45 S&W brass as well. It shoots well and conserves a little more powder for fun loads. I cast 200 RNFP’s out of a Lee six cavity mold and the 255’s come from an Arsenal mold, copy of the 454424. I’ve got a couple original Lyman and Ideal versions of that mold but the Arsenal casts lovely bullets and does the five at a time from an aluminum mold, so it gets used much more!

I’m in Indy ad if you’d like to try some 255’s, let e know and we can meet up.

So I have loaded up some 200g and 250g LRN with hp-38 and titegroup. All is good. But reading that maybe these powders aren’t ideal for 45 colt. What powder is everyone using for 45 colt?

I use Clays for light cowboy action loads w/ 200gr lead RNFP. For normal pressure loads, I load 250gr lead RNFP with AA-5.

Gentlemen: What about .45 Colt in a Henry or Marlin lever action rifle/carbine. What diameter and weight bullets should be used?

I haven't loaded 45 Colt in years, but seem to remember having to match bullet diameter to the cylinder for accuracy. (the front of course)

If I remember correctly the article that brought that up was written by Hank Williams Jr.

    Yeah, that one. FWIW

Inherited a few thousand 200gr RN lead that work great in my Vaquero's and Lever gun. Light recoil with Trail Boss, Titegroup, and some 700X I also got from the father-in-law.

I have been loading the 45 Colt for pistols and rifles since the deer hunting laws changed in 2008.

Hoosier Bullets in Trafalgar have a number of 45cal bullets that are HiTek coated and work marvelously in my guns.

Unique is my powder of choice for SAA to full power non-magnum loads. If I want speed I load my jacketed bullets with H110.

I've shot everything from 185gr ACP bullets to resized (.454) 405gr 45-70 bullets.

IIRC, Hank Williams was a fan of IMR4227 and 250gr bullets.

This is required reading for anyone loading and shooting a 45 COLT.

    .
I must confess to exceding Henry's recommendations. Brought down a deer with a cast Lyman 325 grain RNFP.
