7.91x57 v 7.92x57 v 8mm Mauser Compatible or No?

Restoring a Danzig 1914 GEW 98. Barrel is stamped 7.91, but everything I've read says this rifle was chambered in 7.92x57mm.

From what I've read, the 7.92x57mm is the same cartridge as 8mm Mauser. But then why the 7.91 stamp on the barrel?

Tried Google, not finding an answer. Sure don't want to put the wrong ammo in it.

    7.91, 7.92, 8x57, 8x57IS, or 8x57JS is 8mm mauser it is all the same.. Also you can see 7.90 & 7.93

But in early unconverted mauser arms always a good idea to slug the barrel to see if it is .318 or .323. My bet on the rife you stated its in .323.

But there has been a lot of crazy things done to that rifle over the years, you never know till you look..

    Very helpful post sir.

Are the slugs you mentioned something I can order from Brownells or similar? Not familiar with this tool/process.
