Does anyone else wish Smith would stop with the 7 shot cylinder? Somehow, I just don't find that extra round necessary.

My bigger issue with them is speed loader compatibility. I can't justify buying a 7 shot revolver when I have 6 shot SL Variant speedloaders. Just wondering other's opinions on this.

Let me get this straight... you think that Smith should stop making something just because you don't happen to want to buy it? :dunno:

Do you have the same issue with 5-shots? I have a 5-shot and a 6-shot, and yes, I had to buy different speedloaders for them. I actually looked at the 686 7-shot, but could not justify the extra $175 for one more round vs the 6-shot.

It's the locks I have a problem with.

I did talk to someone at Smith about their new 69, I suggested a limited run in 41 mag with no lock. It was a no go :(

Anyway, I like 7 shots, I think 9 shots are a little odd but that's just me

Yeah that's what I think. Nobody should do anything that I don't want them to. For example, I don't want you to post here anymore.

My problem is that I have $120 worth of quality 6 shot speedloaders. I also would like to buy a 3" 686. Almost all 686 that I see on gunbroker are 7 shot. It's just annoying.

M67 I agree with you on the locks.

I wouldn't say they should stop making the 7's but I'd like the 6 shot 686 offered in the 3" barrel because I only use Safariland because they are the best for me and they do not make them for the 7 shots (not to mention a couple hundred dollars worth of 6 shot L frame reloading stuff). Thought about getting one of the 7 shots and sending it off to get machined for moon clips but after all that expense I would rather have the 8 shot.

The new 986 in 9mm with moon clips I can live with though. Love my 625 for that reason.

    :p

Seriously, I just bought a 4" 686, and I did a lot of looking beforehand. The 3" is pretty scarce, and it comes in a black finish. I think it's a special LEO issue. I found that in the 2.5" and the 4", the 6-shooters were a lot easier to find than the 686+, but I did look other places than Gunbroker. I got a NIB 4" 686 from Clarke Arms for $639. I think he's out of stock on them now, so he's just showing MSRP.

S&W had a limited run on the 7 shot 586 called the 586 L comp. Interesting (they had a model 15 K comp back in the late 1990's) I just wish they offered a 3" 686 with a non comp barrel (never been much for them myself) and 6 shot. Ruger has kept making their 3" GP100 for a reason....they sell

I've had two of these. One was a pre-lock 686 w/ a 2" barrel I miss sorely, though I rarely shot it. The other was a 4" model that was ok. My problem with both was too many years of shooting 6 shooters. Thus range time was BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG......CRAP.....BANG

I think the only current 6-shot 686 with 3" barrel is the Talo. Product: Model 686 3-5-7 Magnum® Series

There are 2 1/2 and 4" in the 6-shot. The six-shot 3" with the black finish that I found was a limited edition from 1992.

The issue handgun for US Customs in the early 1990's was a 3" S&W 686 (6 shot of course) called the CS-1. I shot a couple at a school. Nice pieces. sadly when the Customs service went to S&W Auto's very few of the CS-1's made it into other hands. The Government cut all of them up. Most of the ones (if any) you see now were contract overruns turned out to the market.

I prefer even numbers. I would only get a j frame again in .327fed because its 6 shots. I'll probably get the new 8shot n frame in 9mm and change the barrel because they did the l frame as a seven shot gun.
