Anyone else loading these 77gr smk (no cannelure)

I’ve got a very accurate load with a 16” wylde chamber JP rifles.

    24.0gr varget/2.255 coal/ cci400

Seems a little slow though imo.
    2590 avg.

What powders, barrels, velocities are you all seeing?

    Thanks in advance.

I load the 77gr SMK and Hornady 75gr hpbt.

    25.2gr of AA2520 @2.248"
    Rem 7 1/2 primer
in a LC or WCC case.
    Avg. 2550fps out of a 13.7" barrel.

I get just a faint ejector mark when it's really hot out. I also used 24gr of Varget before I started using AA2520. I'm getting the same accuracy I saw with the Varget load, but an extra 100fps.

    I've also ran
    77gr Nosler w/
    25gr of PP Varmint @2.248
    Rem 7 1/2
    LC
I was around the same velocity as the AA2520 load, but the accuracy wasn't there. I'll have to try this again sometime with SMK or the 75's, because I'm pretty sure the Nosler was to blame for the poor accuracy.

I load mine for a bolt gun best accuracy has been RL-15, 24 grains, Lapua case and gold match primers, next is PP Varmint 24.2 grains same cases and primers, Varget was next at 23.8 grain. So far I have tested 150 loads using the following powders H4895, RL-15, Varget, PP Varmint, XB-8208 and AA223. Velocity wise Rl-15 Avg 2866, ES 21 and SD of 11, PP Varmint AVG. 2768, ES 20 and SD of 15. Varget avg 2690 es of 51 and a SD of 20. Gun has 2800 rounds through it. It shoots lighter bullet to 1/2" these were shooting in the .60" to .75" Barrel is a Krieger Remington varmint weight 24" with a 1/8 twist. Scope is a Burris XTR-2 4x20 Mil. Next bullet to work with is the TMK 77 grain. If it doesn't shoot this it's time for a new barrel. The 77 grain Nosler CC shoot fine in my ARs with a 1/8 twist at under 1" but that gun runs a red dot with a 4 power magnifier.

Bolt gun loads run long to fit a ASCI Mag but the AR loads run just mag length.

I load 77g SMKs but usually with Varget. I don't have a chrony. Mine seem to shoot the best groups with 23.9g loaded to 2.26 OAL. I shoot mine from an 18" LaRue Stealth barrel. Varget usually isn't known for speed. If you want a little more velocity, especially out of a 16" you might wanna try Reloader

23.8 Varget, CCI primer, 77SMK was my go to load for years in a 20 inch AR Service rifle and the 24 inch Match rifle. I don't remember the velocity figures, I was shooting for accuracy not a chronograph reading. This load got me multiple 200 with high X scores at 200 years and more than a few at 300 yard rapid fire matches. good target load.

Used 77 SMK with a load of 23.0 Varget with Federal match primers in Rock River Varmint 18" excellent initial accuracy results at 100 yards. That was some 10+ years ago. But later tried at 150 yards a few years ago and shot very well. Might shoot in an informal 300 yard match next month.

I ran a check on 77 grain OTM match bullets, Nosler, Sierra and Berger. I couldn't get any Barnes or Lapua to check. All are the same base to ogive measurement, but slight difference in OAL. All have been used in the 262 load for the government. Open tips, (Hollow points) vary slightly and that why they use a different bullet pointing punch. Sierra and Lapua use the same punch (b-6 and Berger B-16)

Please cite your source for the info that any of the production Mk 262 Mod x ammunition has used Nosler CC or Berger 77s.

Watching with great interest.....I have 1000 rounds of loaded 77 grain ammo I use for "mid range" work....600 yards, but I need to start to develop an alternative 77 grain load ..........

My sources at Crane gave me the following for you.
Cartridge, Caliber 5.56 mm, Special Ball, Long Range, Mk 262 MOD 0/1: 5.56×45mm 77-grain Open-Tipped Match/Hollow-Point Boat-Tail cartridge. MOD 0 features Sierra Matchking bullet, while MOD 1 features either Nosler or Sierra bullet. What we buy is Mk 262 MOD 1 -C (for commercial) it uses any of the three bullets as supplies of the bullets vary due to demand. Sierra with it's production of bullets for MK316 mod 0/1 and soon 2 which is the only bullet used in that loading.

Very interesting. The accuracy I get out of the 77gr smk would be hard to beat. Atleast with varget it’s been great
