9 mm assault pistol

what is an assault pistol? reading this: 'Historic' Seizure Nets 27 Guns, Thousands Of Dollars In Drugs - Indiana News Story - WRTV Indianapolis they said they confiscated a "9mm assault pistol". I'm not even sure i know what an assault rifle is let alone an assault pistol. can anyone inform me what makes a rifle or pistol an assault weapon.
