The first purchase I made from my favorite LGS back in the day was two Polish M44's for $60 total, not each.

The last can of 7.62x54r I bought for them cost $44 for a 440ct can.

I bought my brother a SKS back in the late 80's, brand new unissued, for $69 and they threw in a case of ammo.

We use to go to Western Auto and they had a barrel full of Enfields for choice $29 but the ammo cost more than the Russian stuff.

We all thought these would be around forever and never felt the need to rush out and get some. This idea that you need to buy up all there are to keep someone from getting them or for investment came later from other greedy minds.

Still going through my firearms to record SN and high and low values for insurance. Turns out I have two 91/59s (adopted in 1959). Both match because they were re-arsenaled and are very nice.

Seems like Fetlas in Valpo had those in a crate, M91's covered in cosmo, going for like $79.
The shorter M38 was like $69.
I figured the Russian Army only fired them a few times and dropped in the snow during WW2.
I watched that movie "Enemy At the Gates", wished I bought one because now they are like $300.

I also remember seeing surplus pistols and rifles on gun magazines in the 70's. Mail order and rated VG to unissued. Man, are those days over.
UPS and FED EX cant even deliver your ammo or parts without losing your stuff !

Around 2012 one of my sons saved his summer money and bought a crate of Mosins, he just told me it was a bit over $2,000 shipped when he bought them. They are still in the grease.
That is incredible. I truly regret not buying a crate of Mosins. Lol

As a teen in the 70's my father and grand father would take us over the river to Old Towne Alexandria to see Interarms and the retail store there called Hunters Haven.

The front yard was full of small and large artillery along with back lot and inside was endless barrels, boxes and stacks of surplus ammo, accessory's and firearms from all around the world.
Then we would walk down the waterfront on Prince st, and look into the huge warehouses that had crates and guns stacked 20' or so high waiting to be rebuilt or sold.
My grandfather would say there is over a 100,000 guns and over a million rounds of ammo in those buildings.
You were awesome Sam Cummings, The Merchant of Menace.

just out of curiosity, i hear people talking about back in the 90's early 2000's how sks's where 80 bucks and ak's where 189. I havent heard anything about mosin. How much where they going for way back when?
I bought mine for $99 in 2011/12. It was straight out of the crate, they had maybe 3-4 crates and were selling 'em cheap! Rounded receivers, not hex mind you.

My parents bought me an m44 for $60 from Dunhams in 2007. In 2011 they bought me an m91/30 for $120 from Dunhams. Both are izzys. Was offered way more than that for the m44 a while back.
I got several from a gun shop or outlet in Versailles, KY. Can't remember the name now. It had a lot of surplus rifles, and ammunition. I bought from them regularly years ago.
Anyway I bought two Model 44 from them for $49 each and two cases of Czech Silvertip 7.62x54mm. It was very accurate ammunition, it was also AP. I think it was considered match ammo IIRC.
IIRC I bought all of that for less than $200. Ended up giving a couple of my nephews their first rifles. They loved them and they still have them yet.

I bought my first M44 and M91/30 from Kiesler's in Jeffersonville around 2004. The M44 was $39.99 and the 91/30 was $49.99. Both came with the accessories they were running a special that included a free 440 round can of ammo with every Mosin purchase. I miss those days...
