Ok i have decided on getting an M&P full size but not sure what caliber to get a 9 or 40 and why.
It will be used for home defense and target/competition ie Friday night steel or some of the practical shooting courses. I'm not going to get to shoot them both to make a comparison I'm not worried about the stopping power a hole is a hole in someone and will slow them down if not stop them. My EDC is a 380
I did a search because I'm sure this has been covered before but didn't find anything. I'm leaning towards the 9 mainly do to cost of ammo.
Thanks for the input. Hoping yo put one in layaway soon.

The 9mm is cheaper and more accurate, but I went with a .40 for my EDC simply because I liked shooting it better and it packs a tad more "punch".

There isn't a huge difference between the two....it's more about personal preference than anything.

You did a search on 9mm vs. .40 and didn't find anything?

That's like saying you can't find porn on the internet...

Since you carry a .380 you're obviously not in the camp that says anything less than .4x won't stop a fly. So there really is no question. 9mm.

My first handgun was a 40 S&W glock. I'll never get rid of that. I bought it for the same reasons you'll hear, stopping power, etc. I feel very comfortable with it and I think I shoot it well.

However, over time I was able to also get a full size and subcompact 9mm. I find that I enjoy shooting them more. And certainly the ammo is cheaper.

But the Glock in 40 S&W is still my go to gun for EDC.

Like the others I would go with the 9mm. :yesway:

Does anyone make a .40 to 9mm conversion bbl for the MP's? That would be a great solution. You could get the .40 and a conversion bbl and it would be a win win.

How many rounds a year do you normally shoot? Whatever that estimate is do the math. The amount you will save over a year by going with 9mm might even buy you a brand new gun.

    I've always traditionally been a 40/45 enthusiast...

But I made my first 9mm purchase with a full size M&P9 and I'll make the same decision tomorrow, too.

I can only reiterate what's already been said in the first few pages,
but there are certainly pro's and con's to both caliber M&P's...

To go against the odds of what people may argue (Even though I prefer my M&P9),
Many would pick the 40 for an EDC for sake of it being simply a larger caliber,
still being able to put 15 rounds down the barrel and the odds of you using it in moments notice will be within close range.

I personally chose the 9mm because... well, let's face it - Money is money, and ammo is certainly cheaper.
Although I'm trained above your average, chances are I'm still going to miss if I'm knee deep in a heated situation (More rounds = More chances).
That, and there's a terrible misconception for 9mm not having any take down power.

If that's the case, I wouldn't know where to begin the conversation if we drug .380 and .22lr pistols into the argument.

Case in point, I'm more than satisfied with 18 rounds of 9mm Hi-Shok JHP's.

The "Job" your gun will most likely do is provide you with hours of entertainment, and building your skill with a firearm.

Pick the round that allows you to do that, and forget thinking about which fictional hypothetical badguy you will likely never meet would go down to a .40 when he wouldnt do a 9.

    That is my advice.

Chance of life being threatened. 1 in 100
Chance of life being threatened and situation requires the use of deadly force. 1 in 1000
Chance of life being threatened, deadly force required, criminal shot with a 9mm and you DIE because he would have been stopped with a .40...

    What? 1 in 100,000?

Play the lottery before worrying about those odds.

9mm For simple fact of cost per-round a better for the 9mm vs 40cal. Specaly if you plan on doing comp. shooting 9mm be you wallet freind. For home protection I would say 40cal would be good choice, the price per-rounds is kind of high if you do alot of range time with the 40cal vs the 9mm.
