It'd be great to have some members of this forum hunting deer with ARs. Especially on public ground. I'd love to hear the reaction from other hunters, COs, etc.

BTW- I use an Encore 209 X.50. Click, boom, dead.

I just picked up a Bushmaster lower receiver yesterday for this very purpose. I'm going to put a 458 Socom upper receiver on top of the Bushy lower. Probably put a simple 3x or similar scope on top and then Duracoat the whole gun in some sort of a camo pattern.

Seems to me that there are 3 excellent modest range (out to 150 yards) deer carbines available on the AR platform. Unfortunately only 1 of those chambering is Indiana legal, but the 3 top choices would be 450 Bushmaster, 458 Socom, and 50 Beowulf. All 3 will easily cleanly kill a deer, a black bear or a wild hog. Only the 458 Socom is legal for deer in Indiana but honestly from the ballistic standpoint, the 458 Socom ballistically appears to be the best, and it is probably capable out to 200 yards or longer while the 50 Beowulf runs out of steam quicker and the 450 Bushmaster appears to be limited to only one loading.

How is it finding 458 Socom ammo?

I'll probably stick with the 44mag lever for public ground.

Funny you bumped this as I'm mulling over selling my RRA 458 SOCOM AR with all of the ammo. I pinned it together (factory RRA upper & lower) to go hunt wild pigs with a friend. I never got into hunting though & this thing just sits in the safe.

It wasn’t legal when this zombie thread was started, but it is now that the max case length was changed to 1.80”. (450 Bushmaster has a case length of 1.70”.)

Jeez, I was reading this and was thinking, great they've changed the regs and now my 450 bushmaster is now illegal. Just read the regs folks.
