If you were with a group of men, out on the edge of your land, tasked with defending it from an external threat, what type of characteristic would you want to see in the men to your left and right.

Trust, and dedication..... I want someone to stand with me, NO MATTER WHAT !!!!!

    Exactly.

Perhaps, but certainly different traits and attributes can shift as priorities change and evolve with civilization and circumstances of the times.

While the traits that make up a man's personal code may always remain the same, the focus on one particular trait may supersede another that used to be held in higher regard.

For example, ancient Greeks put a higher value on physical strength and fighting ability. Today's man may still hold that value in high regard, but it might fall lower down the list than in years past.

Basically, the recipe may include the same ingredients, but the amounts may change over time.

With all due respect, you are talking about changing opinions based on human desires. Human desires do not have the ability to change the true meaning of a concept like honor. Human consensus may have the ability to change the current "accepted" definition of nearly any concept. The true meaning still remains the same. This is because the true meaning of such things are defined by something bigger than humanity.

I understand your point, but man created language. Man controls how language is used, interpreted and defined.

I can only say that this discussion cannot continue without violating forum rules. I understand your point and you have made it clear that you understand mine. I guess we'll just have to leave it at that. Cool topic though!

It would be a great in person discussion. I hope to be able resume it sometime in the future when we're not constrained by those forum rules. Maybe at meet and eat (or shoot) down the road.

Some of the bravest but also most morally imperfect men would and have gave their lives for the man/men next to them. Morality and bravery and integrity are all different issues at times.
The op in my opinion is asking for two different types of answers.

I try not to curse around other people's kids. Really hard too.
Who gives a **** about elbows on the table unless I'm wearing a penguin suit.
most of my family are not worth remembering.
i would gladly give up my seat for a lady or elderly.
a firm handshake is very important and telling to me.

I think it's been touched on already, but the video appears to over complicate a simple (but very dear to me) trait imo.
Strength isn't always physical. Braveness is measured individually. And Mastery depends entirely on the skill needed at any one moment in time.
Honor has little to do with masculinity (though that may not have been what the video is stating). Many honorable women and children have helped to create this country, with little masculinity.

Honesty (leading to trust) is needed. Honesty with one's self, and with others is the springboard. When one is honest with me, then I can trust them. Or rather, when one is dishonest with me, then I have difficulty trusting them.

    - tactically unsound. I'm not gonna push anyone into the road but I don't trust that they won't do it to me.
    - yep. I'm wrong a lot
    - agreed, and do it
    - tactically unsound because sometimes I need my hand on my pocket gun
    - I do
    - agreed. Teaching my oldest this lately even more
    - tactically unsound. Wait are you talking about Chicago & New York or overseas? Safer to admit overseas.

Integrity is the foundation of trust. Integrity = How you act when you think nobody is watching.

Although I wonder... what does dancing around in front of the mirror playing air guitar really say about a person? I have a friend that wants to know.

Loyalty is right up there too in my book. It's hard to find people who will stick with you when things get tough.
