Some steels I just have never been able to sharpen well. I don't think I have ever gotten an edge to my satisfaction (that was not quickly dull) with 440 stainless...

I've had good luck with 440A (assuming a good heat treatment). It won't hold the edge long, but it will take a decent edge.

I've not encountered anout 440B to make a judgement.

440C is (in my opinion) the most overrated knife steel on the market. I know some people are happy with it, but the grain and carbide sizes are too large to get the kind of sharpness I prefer.

The worst, though, has to be 420J2, especially with the non-existent heat treatment it usually has. In my opinion, 420J2 is ornamental or for structural pieces, not working knife blades.
