You are so full of **** you don't even know what caliber gun Faber was shot with. And Sgt. Duell's opinion doesn't equal fact.

It was reported at the time as .30-30 rifle. Never heard anything different. Plus the instructors at the time at the academy taught that you never allow anyone slam a door in your face as that was a sign of disrespect. They are still talking about this case. BTW, I do expect that the instructors now have learned from this mistake.

At the time was 1988. You couldn't find updated information for 26 years? And who is "they" that are still talking about this case?

In two years, no matter how good a job you do in the academy, you will have an increase of excessive force complaints due to having rookie cops on the streets.

Remember the Sanders/Faber incident? Young officer just a year and half out of the academy. Hot August day. Neighbors not too happy that a white dude was living in the neighborhood. Lots of complains about the dog. Young officer (Faber) shows up to tell Sanders (teacher at a private school who bought the house for a dollar) to get the dog under control. Sanders get angry, slams the door in the face of Faber. Faber isn't going to let him do that to him so he forces his way in. Sanders guns him down with a .30-30 rifle. All over a dog who dies about a week later. IPD response to the the scene, officer down. Beats the crap out of Sanders. Sanders does eight years. All over a dog.

Greg Garrison has talked about it. Had there been a senior officer with Faber, it might have been pointed out that it was not worth his life to die over a dog! Let it go.

About the only guy I know who is left from that era is Sgt Steve Duell who was a FTO back then. He pointed out that back then too many officers were too young, that the recruiting age needed to be raised to 25 as the kids just did not have the life experience at 21 to be ready for LE. Too many, even if they were in college, just had not mixed with other races. I do think that aspect has been evolved and that the potential recruits are more use to diversity than in the 1990s. But Sgt Duell (MSGT, USAR) was right that the lower age needs to be 25.

BTW, San Jose CA PD might be the most professional department in the US.

Maybe you should ask your friend "from that era" to refresh your memory on the incident. You left out the physical altercation that occurred out front prior to Sanders attempting to retreat into his home. Had there been a senior officer with Faber, or any officer, maybe Sanders would have been subdued prior to making his way to the front door. On a side note, the neighbors may have been better friends with Sanders if he didn't let his dogs run the neighborhood chasing everyone.

I heard that on NPR the other day. Said the city has paid out over 10 million in settlements in the last few years. You gotta write A LOT of speeding tickets to cover that.;)

The APD is fixing everything. They've just appointed a new officer to their Use Of Force Training. The only drawback I see is that the cop they appointed has already been gigged for excessive force when he damned near burned a guys ear off. Yeah, they're right on the ball out there. Nothing will change.

Perhaps promoting from within was not the best course of action in this case.:dunno:

Well, at least something is being done. The feds have involved themselves and it looks like APD is heading for DoJ supervision. After killing 26 people in 4 years you'd think it would have happened sooner. They've killed more people than Chicago's finest or NYPD.

Odd, I don't remember that as part of either defensive tactics or the criminal justice training. Must've missed that class, LOL.

Ohhhhhh, good! We now have Eric Holder, arguably THE most corrupt pseudo-cop in U.S. history to oversee APD? And that's gonna make things 'better'? :ugh:

Yeah, but he does have a lower body count to his credit than a certain previous AG from a Democrat administration.
