Here's what I'm thinking of. Take a S&W 500 Magnum and change the barrel and cylinder to fire .223/5.56 out of it. The charge holes would be "chambered" to account for the bottleneck of the cartridges. There's a 0.01 inch difference in the cartridge OAL's, so it seems easy enough. The two cartridges run at around 55,000-60,000 PSI max, so no problems there.

Even with the shorter barrel, the .223 will still go close to twice as fast as the .500, with about ½ the energy (and much less recoil).

The point is just that .223 is cheap and fun to shoot, most of us already have a bunch in our stash. Why not have a long-range revolver to blast away with? I mean it could have the accuracy of a Contender/Encore, but be a big-ass shiny wheel gun! As for capacity, it could probably fit 7 or 8 rounds in a cylinder that size. (Maybe not, depending on the strength needed to handle the pressure. But .500's hold 5.)

Am I the only that thinks this is a great idea? It'd be great to shoot a BFG like that without each bang costing $2.50 or more.

I'm just bored and thinking out loud here... fighting off boredom. Don't take this too seriously.

It would be the perfect thing for taking out pesky rad scorpions and golden geckos.

The blast at the cylinder to barrel gap would be dangerous to anyone or anything nearby. It would probably cut the top strap very fast. The 30,000 psi blast from a magnum does damage, 55,000 psi squirting out of that gap would be brutal. Probably cut your finger off if your hold was across that gap.

I think its been proven that a hot .44 mag load will cut your finger off at the gap.

Smith & Wesson had the Model 53 in 22 Jet. A long tapered case, The Cartridges and cylinder had to be kept very clean and oil free,
The revolver was plagued by constantly locking up with fired shells pushing backwards when being fired.
