Sorry if dupe, didn't see this anywhere. Looks like we started using ACME rockets. Thankfully, it was unmanned.

I was watching the launches live feed from NASA when it blew. Sad day all around, but, (as you said) it was unmanned. Burnt a good bit of the launchpad and surrounding area, though. That's what happens when you use refurbished Russian rocket engines.

How much money just went up in flames?

Tax dollars? Few, except for any damage to the pad and launcher. The Antares is a private company launch vehicle from Orbital Sciences Corporation. OSC lost a few buck on this one, and NASA and others lost the contents of the capsule. Sadly, there was an Arkyd satellite that had been crowd funded onboard. Another private company, Planetary Resources is out some money on that one, too.

Actually I'm curious to the overall money loss, but the info you gave is pretty cool!

Gosh darn it to heck, it's 2014. That kind of thing hasn't been going on for what, 60 years? We know how to make rockets now. What was wrong with this one?

    Right here.
I don't recall the exact line but it was something like "and the US government contracts this out to the lowest bidder". And this is saving us tax dollars how?
