The standard VEPR can't use AK mags without modification but on Atlantic Firearms website there's a VEPR MD2 that looks like it uses regular AK mags. I don't have one so I can't say if they are more accurate, but they do use a heavier receiver and barrel.
The stock Veprs have to be modded to accept high capacity magazines. Robinson Arms was one of the first custom shops to tackle the Vepr.
I have owned custom Robinson Arms and stock Veprs over the years. Yes, they are heavy in a few respects and are basically a cut down version of a RPK and are available in several calibers.
