Was at the gun show on Saturday and was looking every Smith & Wesson 4" to 6" barreled revolver I could find there. So this vendor I talk to often had this 686 6" barrel for a 1000.00 and I laughed and said that's kinda high isn't it? He said no that's a 686, then it hit me, it was supposed to be a stainless finish and it wasn't, it was black. He then explained he called S&W to get the serial numbers run and found out it was a short production run for Accu-Sport arms called the "black magic", with a "M" in the serial number on the box to signify it's special coating.

The midnight black stainless 686 was a limited run gun made in 1988 with 1500'ish manufactured in each of 4" and 6". Product code was 104250. Original retail price was $445.00.

They were produced originally in 1988 in both 4 inch and 6 inch. Couple thousand guns in both barrel lengths. Thefinish was not durable and easily marred. Sales apparently was less than desired and production was not continued.

It's still stainless, just with a black coating. Not worth $1000 IMHO though.

I would agree. S&W went crazy in the late 1980s-early 1990s with limited, weird variations. Lots of sub 2,000 runs. These typically had one or two features to set them off like unfluted cylinders, unusual finish or barrel length, etc.

Best revolver I ever owned was a "gun of 1989", a Model 25-7 .45 Colt with a 5" barrel, unfluted cylinder and matte black finish. They made around 1,800 or so of them.

We called them "Smiths gun of the month". They would do runs for anybody that could pay the price. Some were cool, some... not so much.

I'd love to et a 686+p but I can't bring myself to spend so much money on a revolver. I love that it holds 7 rounds....but that to me doesn't justify the cost of $1000 or more for this gun. I'll probably just buy some Taurus 6-Shot revolver in .357mag that will be a lot cheaper.
