Anybody reloading a 45-70 case cut to 1.625" to comply with Deer rifle cartridge regulations? I have a good load but velocity is only 1450 fps. with 300 g. jhp. I'd like to push it a little faster.

A most interesting case. Wondering what rifle you would be shooting this shortened round from? Reason I am asking is that I thought that a rifle was legal ONLY if it could ONLY fire legal rounds. For example you cannot fire a cut down 45-70 cartridge in a regular 45/70 rifle because the rifle itself would still be capable of firing a illegal round. Now if you had a rifle bored specifically for the shorter round and it could not fire a regular 45/70, then I guess you would be ok. Just thinking and curious. Here is a quote I found from a website:

"Bolt action, single shot, lever action and semi auto’s are all legal, provided they fire ONLY LEGAL cartridges.
(ie, a RIFLE which fires both a .410(legal) AND a 45/70(NOT legal) would NOT be legal to use)
Other cartridges are also legal, just as long as they meet the cartridge dimensions listed above."

Have you heard anything along these lines???

You might want to look here:
    articles
Scroll down to the .458 Devastator article. This is a .458 Win Mag case cut down to 1.40" and loaded to 55-60,000 psi. Note the case dimensions compared to a .45-70. The same loads in a 1.625" .45-70 case will have considerably lower pressures.

The rifles are not defined by statute because they all are capable of firing an illegal round The 357 mag can fire a 38 special , illegal. The 44 mag can fire a 44 russian, illegal. The 45 long colt can fire a 45 schofield, illegal and the shotgun can fire buckshot, illegal. I personally have been firing a shortened 40-60 cartridge in my 1881Marilin, and a shortened 45-70 case in my 1873 trapdoor and 1895 marlin. They shoot great. The only problem with the 1895 marlin is that I can only put one in the chamber and one in the magazine. If I put two in the magazine it jams. I can live with a two shooter for two weeks out of the year.

Sounds good to me. Just was curious as I had overheard a conversation in gun shop about this exact subject a few days ago. Hadn't seen any definitive info. Should be a fine round.

What good would cutting the standard 2.100" case do for you? Sounds kind of dangerous to me.

I am not sure that you can push a jacketed hollowpoint fast enough to take advantage of the design. I would explore a heavier cast flat point at 1100 to 1300 fps, something in the 405 gr to 450 gr class will take game heavier than deer consistantly at these velocities and should be easy to achieve in that case length.

I don't know the kind or condition of you weapons or the accuracy of your reloading equipment so I 'm an not recommending that you try my data. You are making little pipe bombs and detonating them 6" from your face. So don"t try this without researching the consequences. To answer your question of what I personally use it is 42.0g of H335 with a Rem 300 G. JHP. 5 shots through the Chrony averaged 1450 fps with a 14 fps deviation. Groups run normally 2-3 " @ 100. Shot through a Marlin 1895 45-70 caliber. I do not assume any liabilities for this cartridge.

I too have the same concerns I believe that what the guys that thought of this are using 44.8grs of Accra 1680. And where fired threw both Marlin, H&R Pardner. The 44.8 must be on the dot or thay will stray.

WOW! I'm only loading 2050 fps in my 45-70's. My rifle really likes that speed. It's a little boring because it keeps putting the bullets in the same hole shot after shot day after day. I may have to try some A l680. Thanks
