They certainly are smarter than the Bernie crowd. They figured out that you need to understand how the government can afford to give you "free" stuff when it produces nothing.

Of course they're smarter. After all, they're the ones who figured out how to carve those little holes in the middle of the cheese!

If I had to pick another country to live in I think it'd absolutely have to be Switzerland.
Being assigned a state issued Sig SG 550 wouldn't be a bad deal either.

I don't think that's true of all of Sanders' supporters. I'm well aware that his plans would be paid for out of my pocket. I'm just not all that bothered by it, is all. Most of the other Sanders supporters I know are similarly gainfully employed.

Sounds like you guys need to take up a donation among yourselves. You know, to support the cause.

I'm just one person. Whatever I could give isn't going to have any effect whatsoever.

C'mon, that's not true. Give yourself some credit. I bet if you agree to pay for your kid...and I pay for mine...it would make a difference, and things will probably work out a lot better than the Education-Industrial Complex Bernie is planning.

No kids. I'm not going to force another mouth to feed on this planet, whether I can afford it or not.

Are you quite certain? I believe Bernie himself said he would need a tax rate of 52% to pay for the free stuff. I have seen numbers more in the 77% - 82% from the various fact-check organizations. If you're making $100k taxable, would you want to live on $48k, or $23k or even $18k? Just so somebody else could have a free B.A. in gender studies? Or who didn't want to work could have better health care than you do?

54.2% would be the new top marginal rate. My marginal rate would be going from 25% to 27.2%. Even assuming that the entire 2.2% goes straight to my effective vs marginal, i doubt I'd even notice.

So, 9.5%, or 19% (less whatever I'm paying in healthcare)? This isn't exactly a doomsday scenario.

Also, this is what I love about discussing progressive taxation. You opened by telling me I'd be living on just $18k:
If you're making $100k taxable, would you want to live on $48k, or $23k or even $18k?

and a few posts later, it's more like, "well, you could lose 9.5% of your income.". Why not open with the real number instead of the scare story?

I remember reading somewhere in an article a few years ago talking about the economics of various European government pension programs (here we call it Social Security), that they needed a population growth of about 11% to sustain generations after generations. You know, because someone has to pay for it.

I don't recall all the wherewithalls of the article, but nevertheless, why wouldn't you want to do your part? You wouldn't want the education program to go broke like SSI would you? Someone needs to pay for it. Right? If there are fewer kids to grow up and work and feed cash to SSI and whateverthehell Bernie calls his education program, who will sustain it?

Because I hadn't bothered to look it up. As a non-believer in The Bern I reference the worst case. As an acolyte you reference the best case.

Predictable, but it presupposes that anybody really knows what the rates will be if his plan is enacted. Because what does big gov't do when expenses exceed the, shall we say, optimistic projections of expenses and revenues? Which is why I referenced the much higher rates predicted by non-Berning sources

Translation: it's no skin off my ass, so I don't mind voting to take other people's money to relieve my own social conscience.

The first rule of holes: if you find yourself in one, stop digging. I don't see how the solution to our unsustainable population is for me to pop out another parasite.

Well, maybe you can be on one of those death panels. If yer gonna do socialism, yer gonna need significantly more givers than takers. And if you want to reduce population, yer gonna need to kill off the retirees. Or, I guess we could continue with unsustainable debt until we can't make the payments. Yay other people's money!
