I want to know at what distance the shards separate and how it affects felt impact?

From the picture with the article, it looks like they started separating at about 1" deep. As he indicated, penetration of the trocars is about like bird shot from a shotgun. Definitely unpleasant, but not what you are looking for in an incapacitating shot.
