    spotting scope or binoculars? i am going west next year for elk and am torn between the two and before you say both realize i am going to have a hard time convincing the wife we need one or the other. thanks

    It depends where your going and how you expect to be hunting. I said good binoculars with a Cabela's Pro Binocular Harness you will more than likely be moving around and have to keep dragging around the spotting scope, rifle, backpack and shooting sticks. I would also advise that you get a set of collapsible shooting sticks to steady your aim when there is nothing around to get a rest off of. If your going to be in a place like the Wyoming plains, kneeling can be a problem with all the cactus. It grows like crab grass does around here. If your hunting out of a truck you can take all the gear you want.

    the place i am hunting is just south of Yellowstone and i will be on foot for the majority of the hunt. thanks for the advise so far

    yep... binos just for ease of use in a field environment.... a spotting scope would be much more difficult to move and use.

    If you're going with a guide, he will have a spotting scope to use, if it is useful for the area. He will not have binoculars for you to borrow.

    If you're not with a guide, you CAN get an elk without a spotting scope, I believe this will be much tougher WITHOUT binoculars.


    BTW, I'll be ther for Elk too, October, keep your powder dry.
