Been thinking about this recently and cant find anything on the indy.gov website about it. I don't really have an issue while surrendering my weapon at the door and being searched cause that means everyone inside is in the same boat except LEOs and security. My concern is that if you are refused admittance or worse then the implication is that you wont be carrying to and from the relevant building which makes you more vulnerable in that transitional period.

Federal Buildings - No. I can't remember the federal code for it, but federal buildings are all pretty much off-limits.

Marion County Government - depends. Thanks to State Preemption, they must do certain things to make it legally off limits. See Indiana Code 35-47-11.1 for details, specifically 35-47-11.1-4 (Exceptions).

Basically, buildings with Courts are LIKELY off limits, public meetings are CC-only, public hospitals MAY be off limits in some cases, and some other random stuff.

Close. You MAY be legally prevented from carrying in any building that has a courtroom, but it's not an absolute thing. If so, it is only by local ordinance and does not, by itself, include jail time, just a (possibly hefty) fine.

You can hand over you gun at the security checkpoint? How would you go about that? I feel it's best if you just leave it in your car. I honestly wouldn't trust a stranger, even if it's the building security with my handgun. Plus, if you park close enough. The whole block is full of cops, everywhere you look.

Not even FBI, ATF, DEA, etc can carry their weapons into the federal courthouse, unless directly escorting prisoners.

    Marshals are exempt, of course.

Several years ago I carried in both federal bldgs in Indy. I went to every federal LE office to gather info regarding employment. The last one I was in was the US Marshall's office. I was talking casually w/ a Deputy USM & asked about the regulations. After he told me it was a no gun zone, he grinned & asked, "so, watcha carryin' ". I told him & he said, "well, when you leave here, go straight out of the building. Don't let the guys in the blue jackets see it or they'll have you on the ground so fast you're head will spin". I thought that was VERY cool of him! He could've taken the opportunity to enforce the letter of the law, get a felony bust & ruin my life, but he didn't.
Thank you to that man, in case he is on here & remembers.
