I had no idea how beautiful Debbie Reynolds was until I watched Singin' in the Rain for the first time a couple of years ago.
In answer to why many express sadness over the passing of a celebrity, it's more to do with losing a link to a shared experience of a really good movie.
It's directly sad for the family, but it's too bad that one of the very few remaining shared cultural experiences that span generations took a blow.
