    Can I carry my handgun in my automobile in the following situations:

    1. Parking at School to pickup son (leaving handgun in car)
    2. Driving by the school on the nearest road

    When leaving in car, is there a particular way it would need to be stored to be considered legal in the situations above?

    question 1... Negative... you can pick him up with your gun, but only if you DO NOT leave the car, even with a LTCH.
    Question 2... still have to worry about GFSZA of 1991, but if you are a LTCH holder, you should be fine as there is an exemption to the 1000 ft rule in the law for permit/license holders

    Indiana law..
    IC 35-47-9-1
    Exemptions from chapter
    Sec. 1. This chapter does not apply to the following:
    (1) A:
    (A) federal;
    (B) state; or
    (C) local;
    law enforcement officer.
    (2) A person who has been employed or authorized by:
    (A) a school; or
    (B) another person who owns or operates property being used by a school for a school function;
    to act as a security guard, perform or participate in a school function, or participate in any other activity authorized by a school.
    (3) A person who:
    (A) may legally possess a firearm; and
    (B) possesses the firearm in a motor vehicle that is being operated by the person to transport another person to or from a school or a school function.
    As added by P.L.140-1994, SEC.11.

    Well if you're just picking up your kid I don't see why it would be an issue. If you were walking around the school with the gun on your person I would see a much bigger issue.

    You can carry picking up or dropping off someone at a school, as long as your butt never leaves the seat. You can even do so on a motorcycle (I have).

    Driving by the school is not an issue.

    NEVER park your car on school property with you gun in it unattended by you. That is against the law.

    When I was 16-17, I would park my truck in the school parking lot, most of the time, there was an sks in the back window, and a 44mag and 9mm laying in the seat. Maybe it was a long time ago? And before the big "school shooting" craze. Or maybe it was just the very small town, but everyone knew they were there, and no one cared.

    ^^^^ Likely before 1994, when the law changed.

    As others have said, the ONLY way* you can have a firearm on school property is if you are driving, have your LTCH, and stay in operation of the vehicle. Can't even get out to help your kid buckle up. ESPECIALLY can't park and leave the gun in the car.

    Driving by the school on a public road is not an issue at all. Just not through the parking area or a "private" access road.

    * Unless you are in a protected class of people with special privileges.
